(More customer reviews)I sought a low maintenance humidifier and decided to try the Hunter. It hit all my desires: Filter that doesn't need replacing, made of materials that inhibit bacteria growth, evaporative (lower cost to operate)...and the real eye-catcher was the "Care Free" designation.
During the first month, everything worked just fine. But as time went on, it became increasingly difficult to clean...
The tray and wick can be put in the dishwasher for easy cleaning. But the fan housing is extremely difficult to clean (it's the largest component and contains the motor and fan). The fan draws air in through the front grill, through the wick where the water evaporates and blows the moistened air out of the top. Because the fan is strong (and loud), dust slowly builds up on the grill (outside and inside). And because the inside of the fan housing is constantly moving moist air, missing one cleaning allows mildew buildup. If this part of the humidifier could be immersed in water, it would've been easy to clean, but it can't. So it is extremely difficult to clean the grill and the inside of the fan housing. When we contacted Hunter on the mildew buildup, they recommended running a little chlorine bleach through the humidifier. That didn't work.
After 1.5 seasons of winter-only use, the fan siezed up and this humidifier no longer works. I'm ready to try another brand.
