CALIBER III DIGITAL HYGROMETER 4 CIGAR HUMIDOR Review

(More customer reviews)This is a fantastic little piece of equipment, and the price absolutely cannot be beat!
Because of the cheap prices of most small hygrometers, I actually bought a couple of different ones. Well, this is the winner, hands down. It's incredibly accurate (both temperature and humidity) right out of the box, no calibration required.
Of course, the first thing I did upon receiving my hygrometers was test out the accuracy. The Caliber III was perfect right off the bat. The HygroSet II was the next closest (but not close enough), and finally the Analog Hygrometer was pretty far off. After calibrating the other two, they were much closer, but the Caliber III was the only one to stay consistent and accurate 100% of the time.
Considering the fact that it's actually cheaper than the HygroSet II, what's not to like about it? Well, okay maybe it's just slightly on the large side for some. I personally think it's fine. It's really not that big, but I guess there are smaller ones out there. However, as far as I'm concerned it is definitely the most accurate.

I did better with the Humi-care gel crystals, with them I had 66%. Would not recommend it, unless you have some money you just want to get rid of.

Great Tool To adjust your humidifier or air conditoner!Avoid damp rooms that promote mold!Most experts recommend an indoors air humidity level between 40 and 60% as most comfortable. Too dry air can strain the respiratory tract, while high humidity levels promote the growth of mold and germs in the walls.Many people use humidifiers during the dry winter months. But does your humidifier work right? Does it provide enough moisture, or too much? Measure it with the TH804 meter!This meter will allow you to check the humidity level and temperature quickly. The sensor is located at the lower edge of the meter, for best air circulation and fast readings. Place the meter in a room and after 3-5 minutes it will give you a stable reading of the current conditions. You then can use the readings to adjust the humidifier. If the meter reads "dry" it might be good to switch it on, if it reads "wet" you should switch it off to avoid mold.

I've found them to be accurate -- all are within 1-2% relative humidity of one another when placed next to each other (in general, hygrometers that are within 5% of each other are considered pretty accurate for low-cost, consumer-grade hygrometers). I have them dispersed throughout the house, so I can verify the temperature and humidity in each room.
The price is pretty reasonable, too. I like the look of these units, and their simplicity. The only "option" you can select is whether the temperature is in F or in C.
The first one we bought two years ago, and the battery is still going strong. I haven't checked the type of battery, though, to see what will be needed when replacing.
With this little tool, it's been easy maintaining the humidity in our house between 40-45% year round with the aid of three humidifiers.

Aprilaire RP-58 Humidistat Control #58 Review

(More customer reviews)This is the new and improved Aprilaire #58 humidstat control. This replaces the RP #56 control they previously used in the model 700, 760 etc. The 56 worked fine for me for a few years before it got fried. It was automatic and could be used with the outdoor temperature sensor. The new one is much improved. It has a cleaner, neater design that incorporates an lcd display, three indicator lights which signify humidifier operation, water panel replacment and one to signal for dealer service in the event of failure. Upon inspection it seems to have a redesigned circuit board with surface mounted relays (quieter than the older model I may add)and adds the ability to interface with Aprilaire thermostats namely the 8570 which allows the thermostat to communicate with it and relay indoor humidity and outside temperature as well as control it without having to go directly to it. This is nice because in most application installs the humidstat is located near the humidifier on the return plenum.
Sometime in 2006, Aprilaire redesigned the humidifers and removed the 24volt control inside the humidifier(#4238)and changed the color from almond to grey and slightly changed the case styling. This helps in determining whether a customer/user has an older or newer unit. There is an A/B switch inside the humidstat that must be set to B if one owns an older humidifier and damage could result if that switch is in the wrong position, so before powering on everything make sure of that.
This humidstat also differs from old models in that it requires 24volt power (2va to 10va) depending on the model of humidifier you own. You can use your furnace terminal accessory board or heat pump air handler board but instead I opted for a plug in 24v 40va transformer. By interlocking the humidifier with a relay in a box and an existing air flow switch on the return and using a plug in transformer I was able to totally bypass messing around inside the the air handler. The previous installation job consisted of using an aprilaire #50 current sensing relay and this is what failed. I would definately recommend using a plug in transformer, a relay in a box (aprilaire rebadges one #4851)and if necessary an air flow switch. The advantage is that the relay will allow the humidifier to run anytime there is a call for humidity not just during the heating cycle. The current sensing relay is only rated for 50 watts while the #4851/RIB is rated much higher. Using an external transformer makes the install easier and allows for anyone to replace it if it goes bad. Strip two thermostat wires and crimp around the terminals and tighten. Plug in and your done. There is a little screw terminal that controls the panel time replacement indicator and for the 700 it should be turned to C. Make sure you follow the directions related to your equipment. In my case Heat pump. Since I did not use the 24volt strip inside the handler I had to jumper the WG/CF to common. Be sure to download the RP-58 Addendum as this has additional information to help with your install. This humidstat has changed and the same configuration cannot be copied and used on this one as the terminal designators have changed as well. I would recommend hooking up the outdoor temperature sensor if feasible as this would make it truly automatic and one would probably never have to make any adjustments at all.
Once in operation it is quieter, has a nice lcd blue backlit display which displays the relative humidiity and the level of humidity as you turn the dial (1-7) and an illuminated led that shows humidifier operation.
If you own an older model (remember almond color) aprilaire humidifier 700, 760 and even 400 - 600 series (check compatibility before buying) and you are in need of a new humidistat or want one with automatic control then this is the one you should buy. It might be slighty more expensive than a RP-56 but it is worth it and comes with a 5 year warranty as all of Aprilaire products now do. These guys are great btw, they know indoor air comfort and can easily be reached by telephone and email, unlike Honeywell.

(More customer reviews)I bought this hygrometer after a lot of research. I use it to monitor the humidity level in my acoustic guitar cases. The hygrometer is compact (fits nicely in guitar cases), is easy to read, and has the nice feature of a record of highs and lows. It is very responsive, in fact I bought two (two guitars!) and tested them side by side, and they basically changed simultaneously. If you pick it up, within seconds the recorded humidity level changes just from the moisture of your hand! It has the industry reputation for being the most accurate hygrometer, and my experience bears that reputation out. I highly recommend this hygrometer for acoustic guitar owners, though for whatever reason it is typically just listed for cigar humidors - guitar makers, dealers, and players should all take notice.

The temperature was all the same, so I would say the temperature was right on. But I wouldn't trust humidity part of it. I do like the display, it's easy to read. Don't know if I'd recommend this because of the difference in humidity. Oh, and the humidity was anywhere between seven and 10 percent of a difference.

HygroSet II Adjustable Round Digital Hygrometer Review

(More customer reviews)Bought three (one for each room) + the calibration kit. Calibrated one, and then matched the other two to it. All were within 2% when they arrived, one needed no changes.
Adjusting them is hard, needed some trial and error. I used another meter as a control while I adjusted the first one.
They are very sensitive, touching them briefly will cause the temp and humidity readings to change, so I had to make a change, let it settle for a few minutes, and try again. It sure was cool seeing all three meters read exactly the same when I was done.
These meters are small, about 1.5" across. Mine had stick-on magnets, and the magnet came unstuck after a few months. Pressing it back on has worked so far.
I tried several other (more expensive) consumer humidity meters under $50, and none even came close to the accuracy of these. Some claimed adjustability but they wouldn't adjust at all. My previous one read low by about 6%, and some I tried were off by up to 10%. After that experience I will never use an uncalibrated humidity meter again.
I was worried I would have to buy one of those $100+ laboratory models to get an accurate reading, these guys came to my rescue.
Now my guitars are safe, my shower no longer has mold, and I don't let it get too dry which promotes various infections (sinus and throat). I like around 55-60% relative, and slightly higher when I sleep.
Update: almost a year later, the stick-ons won't stick back on anymore.
The cool part is all three of them still give identical readings, no recalibration seems to be needed, and the batteries haven't run out yet either.

(More customer reviews)I was most interested in the humidity measurement. I conducted a calibration****(See update at end of review) with a sling psychrometer. A sling psychrometer measures wet bulb/dry bulb temperature and is the least expensive (albeit a bit tedious to use) and most accurate way to determine relative humidity (RH).
I needed to know relative humidity for curiosity indoors and for a chamber in my basement used to dry cure sausage (I needed a 70%RH environment). The Honeywell unit was spot on with the sling psychrometer (and temp. was accurate as well).
The unit is new; I need to check it over time for accuracy. However, it's running very well so far and the price is right. I'll be buying more remote sensors [...] I found the remote sensor part no. is TS33C, can find them on Amazon with that search).
The majority of complaints say the humidity is "off." However, I didn't see a single valid calibration conducted.
Update 01-March-2009
I just took the main unit, the sensor and sling psychrometer. The conditions in my home at time of testing were 68F and 30% relative humidity.
Main unit read 68.4F/30% RH
The Sensor: 68.0F/30% RH
Sling Psychrometer: 68F/31% RH
The sling psychrometer consists of two sealed thermometers and will never need a calibration, it is an accurate standard. This Honeywell Unit is pretty darn good.

Someone contacted me and corrected a big point. I did not calibrate the unit by adjusting it to a known standard, I simply compared the values. My apologies for this rather serious error.
