Bhd-501-G 50Pt Dehumidifier - Heat Controller Inc Review

Average Reviews:

We bought one of these locally before readnig the reviews. I mean, a dehumidifier is a dehumidifier, right? Or so you'd think. Mistake.
It worked great abut 2 days. Then I noticed water collecting in the bucket despite having an external drain hose connected. Though maybe the hose wasn't tight so I added a clamp and emptied the bucket. 2 days later go downstairs to find the unit shut off. Bucket was filled with water. It wasn't coming from the hose outlet. It was coming from the upper cabinet, which was holding a lot of water some place where water shouldn't be. Well we have enough water problems of our own downstairs, no need for another.
Then I found the reivews on the internet which present these units in a very negative light. No quick fix I could find.
So I got as much water out as I could and returned it. It's funny, when you open the box there's a big yellow card that says "STOP! Do not return this item if there are problems. Call for service instead." RIGHT, I'm gona spend $200 for this thing, then 4 days later take it in for service, my time and expense to get it there, and have it gone for a month! How presumptuous. That TELLS YOU right there, they get a lot of returns - and they JUST DON'T CARE. That means means poor quality, and the co. wants the consumer to bear the burden. No thanks. Let THEM deal with their junk product.
Don't but a Comfort-Aire.

DeLonghi DDH30 30-Pint Capacity Dehumidifier Review

DeLonghi DDH30 30-Pint Capacity Dehumidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The first DeLonghi 30-pint unit I received from Amazon looked great but did not function properly; the cooling unit that removes water from the air didn't work. I returned the unit for an exchange. (Amazon gets five stars for their excellent return process). The second unit arrived in good condition and worked for about 2 minutes before the compressor in the cooling unit stopped, never to start again. I tested the unit in an 80 degree bathroom at 100 percent humidity and it did not remove a drop of water from the air. The literature with the unit does not provide any help on this type of malfunction, but does give a Web site address (www.delonghi.com). The Web site had great graphics but no useful information. A note to the company asking if there was any way to solve the problem elicited a recommendation to return the unit.
The DDH30 dehumidifier appears well-made in other respects, but clearly there is a quality control problem with the refrigeration unit, or it is easily damaged during shipment. It appears impossible for a homeowner to open the unit to do any minor repairs, so the only alternative is to return units that don't work. An electrical schematic is located behind the removable water bucket, but isn't very helpful because there isn't any easy way to access the unit's innards. I notice that the controls for the DDH30 are more primitive than the larger models. Perhaps those more sophisticated units are more reliable, but I'm not taking the chance...
In my experience, the DDH30 dehumidifier -- like the DeLonghi web site -- looks great but isn't very useful.

Frigidaire 50-Pint Dehumidifier, FAD504TDD Review

Frigidaire 50-Pint Dehumidifier, FAD504TDD
Average Reviews:

I was a little hesitant buying this dehumidifier without any reviews on Amazon, but last year's model was highly-regarded so I figured there wasn't too much of a risk. All in all, I'm very pleased with my purchase.
Pros:
- Looks great... I know it's a dehumidifier, but it doesn't hurt that it actually isn't hideous
- Really sucks moisture out of the air
- Good energy efficiency
- Multitude of options on how to run (timer on/off, humidity level, continuous operation)
- Auto-restart after power failure
Cons:
- Not the quietest dehumidifier. I've noticed with mine that it tends to start off pretty noisy and level out after about 30 minutes
- No adjustment to the vent airflow is possible, it would be nice if you could direction it up/down/left/right, but this isn't a major issue
Overall impression:
Some reviewers of the last model had difficulty removing the bucket -- mine has posed no problems. I believe that they didn't read the instructions, which clearly say to squeeze in the sides of the bucket gently in order to remove. For those who, like me, have to deal with ridiculously high electricity costs you'll be happy to know that it's a quite efficient model for its size. This dehumidifier reads out around 530 watts on my Kill-a-Watt (measured after it's had time to settle for about 15 minutes. I've noticed it tends to spike when you turn it on, then decrease rapidly, then slowly rise up to about the measured amount).
I cannot comment on its durability, but will provide an update in the future.

Frigidaire Dehumidifier, 70-Pint Capacity, FAD704TDP Review

Frigidaire Dehumidifier, 70-Pint Capacity, FAD704TDP
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I spent a night reviewing dehumidifiers at Consumer Reports, amazon, and elsewhere to understand what I should use for a damp basement after the 2010 east coast winter. I realized, finally, by plowing through all the hype, that the "70 pints" does not refer to the volume of the bucket, but the rate at which the dehumidifier can remove water vapor from the air: 70 pints per day, but the buckets are all the same, about 2 gallons. That needs to be made clearer in the review and advertising. For a block-wall basement, with French drains, in an area with high water table, or for any room where liquid water appears, you need the highest rate so the unit cycles on and off. Otherwise, you seriously waste power.
This unit (Frigidaire FAD704TDP) was not reviewed by Consumer Reports, but by others who were concerned with drying rates and noise. This unit is almost silent! It filled a 2-gal bucket in just a few hours in a 40x60 foot basement with no liquid water but with damp block foundation. Overnight, the difference was remarkable; in two days time, it was dry and liveable without further odors. It cycles in 1-3 hours, depending on rainfall, when set to 40% humidity, and I would suppose that higher or lower settings may be needed at other times of year.
I built a clear vinyl hose from parts at hardware store, and piped the water to the small sump attached to the house HVAC. The unit had to be placed on an 8" box (wooden), with casters to keep it from rolling off. Being able to see the hose water was important as grunge will appear; when not hosed out, this eventually blocked the hose and defeated the dehumidifier. The built-in air filter is not designed to remove mold spores to prevent this problem.
A very good product, confidently recommended.
