(More customer reviews)Given its price the Aprilaire manual humidistat performs fairly well. However, it did not fit into the old humidistat opening without drilling, and it is about 2% off in its setings. This spring I will replace it with an automatic one.

An increase in relative humidity expands the nylon ribbon which opens the control switch to stop operation of the humidifier. A decrease in relative humidity reverses the process and closes the control switch.

(More customer reviews)I don't use this product to clean a humidifier but as a cleaning product. It takes hard water off of any surface like you would not believe. I sprinkle a little of this on on get some on a toothbrush. It bubbles and just eats away the hard water. You can then rub it with the toothbrush and it will general vanish.
Love this stuff, I've been using it to clean sinks, tubs, toilets, etc for many years.

Remember to order an Aprilaire 4004 In-Line Strainer and the correct orifice for your humidifier model when you order this solenoid valve, because it doesn't come with them. If you forget the orifice, don't be surprised when water starts gushing out of the humidifier, because the orifice regulates the amount of water fed to it. The strainer goes in the long end of the solenoid fitting, and the orifice in the short end.
Aprilaire 4231 Yellow Orifice: Aprilaire models 400, 500, 550, 550A, 560, 568 & 600.
#4021 Aprilaire Red Orifice: Aprilaire models 112 & 224.

Could only get it from the HVAC supplier which I wanted to avoid since I didn't want to have to pay a markup. So I searched the world via the Internet to see what I could find and wow what a deal! This filter costs 3 times less than going through my HVAC supplier. Keep in mind, this humidifier and brand have been around forever so I was glad to see that I didn't have to spend alot of money on this simple maintenance item. I only ordered one since I wanted to make sure it really was the correct part. It was! It was not some imitation (copy) part like another supplier offered.

(More customer reviews)I checked my son's humidifier. It was a disaster. I don't know how he and his family survived without getting some horrible disease and destroying their lungs. (Who knows, maybe it just boosted their immunity.) We not only replaced the filter but the entire humidifier. Now we all sleep better.
This is a good product, and we will try and replace the filter every year or two as needed.

It has to be soaked for 15mn and then thoroughly rinsed so that it works properly. If you do not rinse it,the humidifier shoots a not very pleasant yellowish mist that fills up the environment. Other than that, it has been a very good product.

We live in the Southwestern desert and our family members all have naturally dry skin so our humidifiers practically run year around (one in each bedroom, 365 nights a year). I only need to replace these filters about twice a year because, every month, I soak them in vinegar to remove the hard water deposits. This keeps the filters supple and able to absorb/output more moisture into the air. Don't buy the cheap "fakes" on eBay; get the original Vornado filters; they'll last a whole lot longer than the "fakes". Love the Vornado humidifiers too -- easiest to use and clean!
