(More customer reviews)This is merely a drugstore style spinning disk humidifier made of metal instead of plastic with a toilet bowl style water filling valve. Loud as hell and back, randomly, due to lack of precision roundness of the very fast (vs. the drugstore version) plastic disk. It's a molded piece that likely is being de-molded too fast so it warps a bit. WRRRZZzzzzzzzzzzZZZaaaahhhhhhHHHHAHHHAZZSZARrrahhhh.... The vibration isolation sucks. It's little rubber grommets that huge metal studs (threaded rods) jut through, topped off by brass nuts. That metal connection links the top plate that holds the motor to the sound board that is the metal bucket. So I removed the brass nuts and the rubber grommets were set free to stop filling my apartment with ugly noise. Now it's white noise. Calm noise. It does NOT put out enough water vapor to do more than a couple of small rooms. Oh, yeah, better than nothing, much better, but not enough to raise my 1200 sq. ft. NYC apartment from 28% humidity much above 35%. But that's enough to help with dry skin and any coughs that linger after I inhale crap all day during my work in an art and design studio. It's a good product. The top has a wire that sort of prevents it from laying flat on the bucket, so I glued it down, but that prevents you from taking it apart to clean the rotor. Doesn't really matter. The float inside that controls the water level in the bucket can be bent by hand to allow a bit more water in so it's deep water the rotor tip is dipping into instead of shallow water which makes it's own type of very odd noise. Stuff of nightmares, that. After all these years, this little trooper is making me feel like it's spring already. The wall humidity control is top notch and uses some sort of wrapped around plastic film to measure humidity. There's enough mechanical "click" to actually measure the current humidity by cranking the knob left and right. The unit puts out vapor instead of actual gas, so hard water issues are mostly solved by the mineral solids being ejected into the air, but unlike sonic humidifiers, it does not put out a fine white dust of hard water evaporate.

I could find nothing on the box or filters to indicate that they were genuine Hunter filters. I notified the company who offered to refund me the money if I returned them. I figured it wasn't worth the hassle if they wouldn't just take my word for it and send me the correct filters. I won't be doing business with this company again.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this item a couple of weeks ago. When it arrived last week a part was completely broken in half (half of it was missing.) Getting a simple return authorization has been a nightmare.
First, I went to Amazon. Amazon stated that I would have to call Northern Tool & Equipment (NT&E). I called NT&E and, after being on hold for 20 minutes, they stated that they would have to contact the manufacturer. A WEEK LATER I received an email from NT&E stating that the manufacturer needed to know the EXACT PART that was broken. So, I found the instruction manual, found the part number and gave NT&E another call. After another 20 minutes on hold I was told that the information would be passed off to the manufacturer.
I still haven't received a return authorization and I don't know when I will.
Bottom line, it appears that NT&E doesn't really know how to sell it's products online. Dragging your customers through weeks of red tape and phone calls to make a simple return is just terrible customer service.

Venta 370 Digital Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)Like the title says right out of the box all it did was blink the display endlessly. The manual makes no mention of this condition specifically, but does advise re-seating the maintenance free box and trying again. No dice. With quality control of this caliber, letting a relatively simply device like this slip out in a completely non functioning condition, I'm not going to give them a second chance or any benefit of the doubt. I'll be interested to see some reviews of this unit from other who might get a functioning unit.
Also the marketing claim that this is the "First ever maintenance free humidifier" is patently false. You need to purchase a "maintenance free box" after every 1 000 hours of operation at around $30.00 a piece. Twenty four by seven operation during the cold months when my forced air furnace is operating means you get about six weeks before shelling out another thirty bucks. Not exactly "maintenance free" in my book or Merriam-Webster s book for that matter - where "maintenance" is defined as "the upkeep of property or equipment".
UPDATE 11/17/2007: Going against my better judgment we did decide to try another unit. Within 20 seconds there was a stream of cool mist flowing into my family room, confirming that my first unit was indeed DOA. The 2 gallon tank lasts around 20 to 24 hours. The top of the unit and the side in which the mist is flowing will always get soaked with water. You will find yourself frequently wiping it down of standing water. No matter how careful I tried it was impossible to remove the tank for filling or replace the tank after filling without getting water everywhere and creating a mess to clean up. I was willing to put up with all of the little annoyances that this humidifier had to offer because it really does make my family room much more comfortable to be in. However, after about five days of using this humidifier I noticed a white film on my television. Then I noticed that the white film was on everything. It took forever to clean up and quite honestly I don't think I'll ever be able to fully remove the dust and film that was deposited everywhere. I should have went with my gut instincts on this one.
Similar to my rant above regard the "maintenance free" box, the manufacturer makes very specific claims: "No germs, no filter, no cleaning, no white dust". I've never owned a humidifier in my life that generated so much white dust. The claims made are so definitively false, and I can't believe anybody at Venta would believe them to be true, that I'm tempted to bring the matter to the attention of Consumer's Union and/or my state attorney general's office.

(More customer reviews)I have had this unit for several years. It has outlasted all "Sears" brands and models.
Secrets to making it work: I use the 1041 wicks. Every two weeks or so, I take it into the bathroom, pull out the wick and using a hand held shower, spray off the wick thoroughly. This helps lower the mineral build-up and the wick lasts longer. Also I change wicks about every two months. So I need about three for the heating season.
Yes the electronic "humidistat" doesn't work. Simple, I set the unit to a higher humidity than what is displayed. When I want to run it, I turn the unit on. When I want it off, I turn it off. And I use a separate humidity gauge. This one works wonderfully:

As for noise, I only run it on the 2, 3 or 4 level. Yes, you can crank it up, but just like any fan, the more you crank it the louder it gets... and I can hear the TV just fine even when this is running...
It's much easier to carry a bucket of water to this unit to fill it up than clumsy bottles to drag out and carry elsewhere.
GREAT humidifier and I've had this one for several years and if I need another one, I'll hope to get another one of these.
Here's another hint. Don't mount it on the wheels that come with and then put the entire unit on a towel or carpeting scrap. Also helps if you spill a bit of water when filling.
Do NOT forget the bacteriastat either, but be careful when using this additive, as always. And yes, it is normal for the wick itself to be about half dry (at the top) and half wet (at the bottom). The entire wick does NOT need to be saturated soaking wet for this to work as the "well" of water is only the few inches at the bottom...

To summarize, it's an evaporative humidifier which works by drawing air in through the top via a fan then over a disk pack of about 10 slowly rotating plastic disks which dip into a pool of water, then the air exits the side carrying the humidified air.
Pros: No heated element to worry about overheating when it runs dry, no ultrasonic misting to leave water droplets on carpet/furniture, easy to clean, no filters to be replaced, and it traps air particles on the discs with the water so it does 'wash' the air.
Cons: Evaporative which means it cools (fine for the desert country, not so good in winter in the Midwest), no heating, and the fill valve on the water tank is the stupidest location you can imagine, so that at best you can fill it only 3/4 full.
The other con: They SAY on their website they have a 10 year warranty, yet when I got this thing from Bed Bath and Beyond the plastic shaft inside had corroded from time and was crumbling. It was a major effort to get these guys to agree to replace it. It is NOT SAID on their warranty, but apparently the 10 year warranty does not apply to the rotating disc set (surprise!). I told them they had better put that in writing if they don't want to tick off a lot more customers other than me. They eventually replaced it. Also note, the 10 year warranty does NOT apply to the water tank and its part . . .that's only 3 months.
For $260 bucks or more, the above limitations cut it to a 3 star, even though it's a reliable humidifier that cranks out the humidity from the unit with no filters and very little maintenance. As a personal aside, I can't stand the reviews which deride humidifiers because their hygrometers show no change. Humidifiers can only be evaluated by how quickly they put water into the air . . . the ultimate humidity change is depending on the room's air flow, items of absorbency, and atmospheric conditions- none of which are in the control of a humidifier!

(More customer reviews)The Hunter NiteGlo Night Light Humidifier fulfills my needs for an overnight humidifier. Given I do not run my furnace from 10pm until 4am my bedroom does get a little dry and waking up with a dry mouth several times a night can be annoying at best. So I decided to pick up this machine with the hope it would end my suffering. With varying speeds this little unit does what I need it to do. The humidifier itself has a washable filter so you don't need to constantly buy expensive filters. It comes with a nite-light so that you can monitor the water level easier and provides minimal light to see in the dark, but not bright enough to interrupt sleeping.
The motor can be a little loud and it will take some getting used to if you are a lite sleeper. The water container is pretty small and takes about 48 hours on medium speed before refilling. The humidifier works by pushing air through the water soaked filter, so it doesn't actually mist like some humidifiers do. When the water container goes empty the fan does become louder and the water left in the bottom of the unit does gurgle pretty loud. The water as it filters down into the tub does gurgle as well but its not that big of a deal. The unit breaks down into five different parts, the water container, tub, filter holder, and fan unit, making it easy to clean. The parts(not including the fan unit) made it through my dishwasher fine and the filters are easily washable in hot sink soapy water. All-in-all a good machine.

AIR-O-SWISS 2055 Ionizing Air Washer & Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)Having been directed to an evaporative type humidifier, I became intrigued with the basic design of the Venta and AirOSwiss models. Both use fans to draw air over water, with turning discs passing through the water with tiny grooves and bumps on the discs to vastly increase the surface area over which the water evaporates. No heat to worry about drying out and automatically shutting off, and no bubbling water from a warm mist unit. Also, no droplets of water accumulating on nearby carpet or furniture as you would see with an ultrasonic humidifier. Also, no swampy mold accumulating in the 'swamp style' Honeywell unit that uses a wicking method to draw the water up into a sponge to then be evaporated, leaving a wet sponge to grow all kinds of stuff. The pros and cons are pretty clear:
Pros: No heat to worry about if the unit runs dry- the fan keeps running but so what? It's just a fan; also no to worry about overheating when it runs dry, no ultrasonic misting to leave water droplets on carpet/furniture, easy to clean, no filters to be replaced. No wicking sponge, so the discs are easily removed and cleaned and no 'swamp thing' accumulating in the wet wicking sponge as in other units. Also the water seems to trap small air particles so that there is an actual cleaning function. Air is drawn IN through the TOP of the unit, blows over the plastic turning discs, and comes out the sides.
Cons: Evaporative, which means it cools (fine for the desert country, not so good in winter in the Midwest), no heating, and the fill valve on the water tank is the stupidest location you can imagine, so that at best you can fill it only 3/4 full. Also, it won't shut off when water runs out, so power will be consumed with no humidification happening. See below for the one last 'con' relating to the warranty.

The Honeywell engineers in their infinite wisdom put beautiful rounded tops on the water tanks. Looks great, but when you invert the tank in the kitchen sink to refill it, it won't stand up in the sink and the wobbly thing has to be held upright while filling from the tap.

(More customer reviews)I recently moved to Aurora, Colorado (just outside Denver) and at 5,400 feet the humidity is extremely low. I noticed my skin began to itch, which it had not done before. My doctor advised moisturizing creams, which helped a bit, and an air humidifier. After a lot of investigating I narrowed my search to the Air-O-Swiss and the Williams. In fact, both units seemed remarkably similar with both using a "patented" ionic silver cube and a filter cartridge which seem visually identical. Both units provide warm and cool mist. Possibly the technology is licensed from Air-O-Swiss? The deciding factors for me were:
(a) the Air-O-Swiss listed a capacity of 650 sq. ft. and the Stadler 1,000 sq. ft. I have a very small house - 850 sq. ft. - which effectively makes the Stadler a whole house humidifier for me.
b) almost every review of the Air-O-Swiss commented on the inaccuracy of it's humidity meter and the only review I could find of the Stadler said it's meter was accurate.
THE GOOD: Assembly is a snap. The meter is close to accurate. The water tank is extremely easy to remove and fill. It is dark plastic, but the water level can be seen quite clearly. The tank capacity is sufficient for 9 hours of continual use. The machine is so silent that I have to listen closely at night to hear anything at all. Just a soft "ssshhh." The Control Panel is easy to see and use with many options and has a light to indicate no-water.
My skin itching stopped.
THE NOT SO GOOD: It is expensive and every source I could find had the same price. The filter cartridge needs to be replaced three or four times a year, depending on the hardness of your water, or when white dust accumulates on the unit or on a small mirror held to the fog. The ionic cube must also be replaced once a year. A testing strip is included and if your water has a hardness greater than 21 degrees dH, an ionic humidifier is not recommended. They suggest then using an impeller humidifier. The Desired Humidity cannot be set lower than 40%, but I found that setting it at 60% results in an actual humidity level of about 37% which is what I want anyway.
THE BAD: I couldn't find any.
SOME NOTES ON OPERATION: The instructions say not to place the Stadler Williams directly on the floor or next to heating. I went to Ace Hardware and found a small, plastic step stool for $12 that is 5" high. This keeps the unit off the rug and makes it easier to access when changing settings. If you have an chest of drawers in the room with space on top it should work equally well. A review of the Swiss-O-Air reported good results from soaking the ionic cube in water for 24 hours before initial use to increase effectiveness. I don't know if this is beneficial, but I did it and had no bad result.
I set my unit to Auto/Sleep
IMPORTANT: Several reviews of the Air-O-Swiss said that they used de-ionized water. The Stadler unit specifically recommends against this. It is designed to use with untreated water or with a drinking water filter system such as Brita. Using any additives are specifically warned against.

Air-O-Swiss 32838 Ultrasonic Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)WHEN it works it is OK. It has all of the defects described by the other reviewers. But they make up for the defects with rotten customer service. I bought this unit on January 31 07. Used it until the end of March, at which time I cleaned it and replaced all of the consumables per the instructions. I put it back in service two weeks ago. Six days ago it stopped working. I called their customer service. They use an out-sourced customer service group that will NOT talk to you, but rather, insists on taking your number and calling you back in the evening. Of course, they called back when I was out and left a message that they would call the following evening. They did not. I called back the next day and went through the same thing. That evening, since thay had not called by 8:30, I called them. This time, they insisted that I go through some trouble-shooting (all of which I had done previously). They then told me to leave it unplugged for a 1/2 hour (by which time they would be gone) and then "reset" the unit by pressing a button combination. I did this. The next day I called them again and got the same "wait until tonight" pitch. I insisted on an RMA number, which I received. HOWEVER, before they will tell you where to ship the unit, you need to FAX them a proof-of-purchase (their email address bounces back). The you have to wait for them to call. It is now 6:30PM on a Friday night and no call. So I called them and got their voice mail, where I was instructed to leave a message. So It will not get shipped to them this week. Next week I am traveling, so it won't get shipped until the following week, which means that they will not get it until after Christmas, which means it will be mid-January before I get a repaired unit. These people are total idiots. For a $200 humidifier, I would expect some sort of real customer assistance. Be warned before you buy.
UPDATE: Well, a month after I sent the defective unit in, I received a TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND MUCH CHEAPER UNIT in return. I am now on my THIRD phone call with these idiots and have yet to talk to someone who can resolve this problem. The right person is "not in the office" and will "call me back." HAH!! They NEVER call back. I wish I had never heard of these people.

(More customer reviews)The humidifier is very quiet on the low setting. There are only 2 fan speeds so it was kept simple. It has a very innovative design because there is no tank to remove and fill under the sink. Instead you can add water from the top using a pitcher. The replacement wicks are more pricey than the Vornado evaporative humidifier. The cost of the wicks is a concern if you let it run out of water because then the wicks will gather dust and need more cleaning or possible replacement depending on how long you have let it run empty. (I edited this review so I would have put 4 stars rather than the original 5 but the "edit review" features do not allow you to change the number of stars.)

We have been through just about every type/brand of humidifier in our quest for the perfect one over the last 15 years. So when I pressed the "on" switch on our new "Venta Sonic VS205" I knew our quest was finally over. Out came an unbelievable "fog cloud" of humidity that gently wafted over the room. Later as the humidity level rose - monitored by the nifty LCD readout on the front - the unit suspended "cloud formation" and waited patiently until the room percentage had dropped below the set level and then resumed.
Pros::
1) Absolutley soundless!!! Many of the other brands worked fine but were so noisy we couldn't sleep.
2) Runs at least 24 hours on a fill (depending on what level you set it on - ours is 45% - 50%)
3) Instant gratification - monitors the humidity level in your room - not many actually do this - you just have to guess and never really know - so this is big.
Cons:
1) The only one - it's a bit tricky to fill. Have to turn the tank upside down and unscrew the filter. As an Industrial Designer I could come up with at least 3 better ways to do this - one being simply have another fill cap on the top. But this is really not a problem since the unit has so many other admirable features (AND - you only have to do this once a day!!)

(More customer reviews)After having an infant addition to our family, I began looking for a humidifier especially with the Winter season fast approaching. I was looking at function, maintenance parts and prices as well as build quality and design. I didn't like how the various humidifiers looked like - too quirky, too plastic-looking, too generic.
Then this Air-O-Swiss U650 caught my eye. It had an elegant design and shiny white colour that would fit any contemporary home. It reminded me of our Rabbit Air purifier in both elegant design and price. If I were to add this to our home, it wouldn't be an eye sore.
FEATURES:
1. Digital Display. Easy to read display even from afar to spot check it's current setting.
2. Sensitive Touch Controls. No need to press oddly raised buttons. This one sits flush on the unit for a seamless and simple design.
3. Simple Amber Lighting. No multi-coloured tacky lighting. This reminded me of the old German car lighting that was easy to see and read. At night, you can dim the backlight for a non-annoying soft light.
4. Hygrometer. This is one of the reasons why I chose this unit. Unlike the cheap humidifiers that just keeps on spewing moisture into the air. This unit will alert you of the current humidity level in your room/home. From there you can make a sensible judgement if you still want to introduce more humidity by raising the desired level.
5. Auto Mode with an "Intelligent Temperature Compensation". Humidity levels change when the temperature changes. You can't just expect to keep on maintaining a certain level when it's not advantageous and healthy. By setting the unit to auto mode, it calculates the desired humidity level based on the current temperature. No need to second guess what level you should be at throughout the whole day.
6. Cool/Warm Mist. Both have it's pros and cons depending on the current condition and season. You'd want a warm mist on cooler days and a cool mist on colder days.
THOUGHTS:
Like any humidifier or product that involves water for that matter, you'll need to know how to best maintain the product to keep it functioning as expected and prolong the life of the unit. For this specific Air-O-Swiss humidifier, there are two parts to replace:
- The Ion Silver Stick that eliminates bacteria in the water and is expected to be replaced yearly. Expensive, but at least just done annually.
- Demineralization Cartridge that needs quarterly replacement depending on the usage of the unit. If you use tap water, this is important to prevent any white dust due to hardened minerals to form in the water. Upon first use, you will need to soak this cartridge in water for 24 hours. The work-around is to use distilled or reverse osmosis water. That way there are no minerals in the water and you won't need this cartridge at all. Of course the cost is now buying distilled water versus buying another part. Choose your poison. If you have a reverse osmosis filter for your home, then that is even better. You save on buying this part and you are helping keep the product in the best shape ever.
Although I'd love to have this unit be more compact and slim, I guess it's necessary to be this bulky to prevent frequent water refilling for at least a day or even days. Where I reside, it rains quite often so there is enough moisture in the air at times. Since the unit is able to read the humidity levels in the air, it won't operate unless needed. This in turn helps eliminate the water tank refills.
If you were to invest in a humidifier, skip the novelty of the others and the guessing game of humidity levels in your home. This will do the job. Quite elegantly, I must add.
