Lasko® Natural Cascade Humidifier Review

Lasko® Natural Cascade Humidifier
Average Reviews:

This is my third humidifier in as many months. I tried an expensive ultrasonic with a filter but it still produced a grotesque amount of white dust. I then tried a warm mist unit but the humidistat did not work at all and the boiling chamber quickly became caked with mineral deposits that were hard to remove.
The Lasko unit is well designed and built reasonably well for the money. White dust does not seem to be a problem and the circulation of the water seems to prevent bacteria growth. It does require cleaning but they all do.
I have not used it long term, but it seems be a great product in the two weeks I have used it. The replacement filters are reasonably priced and available directly from the company (there is a sticker with their toll free number next to the refill cap which was thoughtful).
I sent an email to the company with a question and they responded promptly.
I am giving the unit five stars because it is amazingly hard to find a humidifier that even approaches acceptability. I was looking for a humidifier that does not produce white dust, has a functioning humidistat, and is not a germ factory. This unit seems to meet the criteria.

I ordered this item a couple of weeks ago. When it arrived last week a part was completely broken in half (half of it was missing.) Getting a simple return authorization has been a nightmare.
First, I went to Amazon. Amazon stated that I would have to call Northern Tool & Equipment (NT&E). I called NT&E and, after being on hold for 20 minutes, they stated that they would have to contact the manufacturer. A WEEK LATER I received an email from NT&E stating that the manufacturer needed to know the EXACT PART that was broken. So, I found the instruction manual, found the part number and gave NT&E another call. After another 20 minutes on hold I was told that the information would be passed off to the manufacturer.
I still haven't received a return authorization and I don't know when I will.
Bottom line, it appears that NT&E doesn't really know how to sell it's products online. Dragging your customers through weeks of red tape and phone calls to make a simple return is just terrible customer service.

These are not OEM pads, they are the cheap-o replacement pads. I gave them a try (to save money) and I regret it. When I use these pads the humidifier can not humidify the house adequately.
I believe the problem is the foam that they are made from. The holes are too small/tight and the air does NOT flow through them. That means they are very inefficient.
I am very unhappy with these filters and will never buy them again. Since I bought 4 of them I will also end up throwing away three of them. Learn from my mistake!

Venta 370 Digital Humidifier Review

Venta 370 Digital Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Like the title says right out of the box all it did was blink the display endlessly. The manual makes no mention of this condition specifically, but does advise re-seating the maintenance free box and trying again. No dice. With quality control of this caliber, letting a relatively simply device like this slip out in a completely non functioning condition, I'm not going to give them a second chance or any benefit of the doubt. I'll be interested to see some reviews of this unit from other who might get a functioning unit.
Also the marketing claim that this is the "First ever maintenance free humidifier" is patently false. You need to purchase a "maintenance free box" after every 1 000 hours of operation at around $30.00 a piece. Twenty four by seven operation during the cold months when my forced air furnace is operating means you get about six weeks before shelling out another thirty bucks. Not exactly "maintenance free" in my book or Merriam-Webster s book for that matter - where "maintenance" is defined as "the upkeep of property or equipment".
UPDATE 11/17/2007: Going against my better judgment we did decide to try another unit. Within 20 seconds there was a stream of cool mist flowing into my family room, confirming that my first unit was indeed DOA. The 2 gallon tank lasts around 20 to 24 hours. The top of the unit and the side in which the mist is flowing will always get soaked with water. You will find yourself frequently wiping it down of standing water. No matter how careful I tried it was impossible to remove the tank for filling or replace the tank after filling without getting water everywhere and creating a mess to clean up. I was willing to put up with all of the little annoyances that this humidifier had to offer because it really does make my family room much more comfortable to be in. However, after about five days of using this humidifier I noticed a white film on my television. Then I noticed that the white film was on everything. It took forever to clean up and quite honestly I don't think I'll ever be able to fully remove the dust and film that was deposited everywhere. I should have went with my gut instincts on this one.
Similar to my rant above regard the "maintenance free" box, the manufacturer makes very specific claims: "No germs, no filter, no cleaning, no white dust". I've never owned a humidifier in my life that generated so much white dust. The claims made are so definitively false, and I can't believe anybody at Venta would believe them to be true, that I'm tempted to bring the matter to the attention of Consumer's Union and/or my state attorney general's office.

Aprilaire 360 Thru The Wall Home Humidifier Review

Aprilaire 360 Thru The Wall Home Humidifier

I am glad I bought this unit. I was so tired of daily filling, draining and cleaning my console humidifier, and the crusty white stuff that accumulated on it (not to mention the slime mold that grew in the tank if I didn't clean it with bleach.) This unit connects to your hot water line and to a drain, so it supplies its own water and continuously cleans itself. There's no crusty white stuff, you just set the humistat and forget about it. It's fairly quiet, too.
Though the unit is fairly small (about 13 inches square) and not heavy (15 lbs.) it's more than adequate to completely humidify our 1600 sq. ft. home.
I don't know about energy usage or reliability because I just started using it, but so far the performance has been wonderful.

We live outside the US in a country that is very dry almost all year round and use the humidifier with a transformer. We have had it running constantly since we received it two weeks ago. We ordered the replacement filters from LearningCurve.com and use filtered tap water. It is a simple, easy to use humidifier and I would recommend it to anyone who has a problem with dry air. We bought it mainly because we were having trouble sleeping because the air is so dry. It definitely makes a difference.

AIR-O-SWISS 7133 Humidifier Review

AIR-O-SWISS 7133 Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had been pricing and comparing the substantial number of humidifiers on the market and I am glad I settled on the Air-O-Swiss. Despite its higher price, I am quite satisfied with its functions, control, design and specifically, its quiet operation. I was looking to pay between $70-150 for a quiet, low-maintenance model to add humidity to my [very dry] 10x12' bedroom. I purchased it at a local store for the same price as listed on Amazon; I am glad I was able to see [and hear] this model in operation.

There is NO sound, even at the highest setting. I'm a light sleeper and cannot fathom a bedroom appliance that even approaches a dull hum.
The visible mist generated by this model is pleasant for me and my pets.
I have been refilling each morning, as I have had the device on a high setting and running nonstop. The compartment becomes about half-empty after a full day at this setting. Refilling is a snap.
The ability to have cool and warm settings is a big plus, since the jury is still out regarding the negatives and rewards of either mode.
The system has been running clean and I am certain this will continue to be the case with a modicum of effort. The cost of the filter and the silver stick is not intimidating and the recommended three-week maintenance check is reasonable.
The design is quite fetching. Minimalist and fetching.
I have it sitting on the floor and there is no dampness on the carpet as mentioned by owners of other brands. This tells me that this model is doing a good job of propelling the mist into the air.
My roommate recently paid $29 for a smaller Holmes humidifier. The Holmes is downright deafening and I am sure she would have paid the difference for an Air-O-Swiss. Silent operation is really important.
The only possible shortcoming is the hygrometer. It is not entirely intuitive: the machine is to shut off after the desired humidity percentage is met, yet I have yet to see the model shut itself off. Turning it off manually is not a big deal.
I took a big step purchasing an air purifier, but this purchase has made a significant difference in my bedtime and bedroom comfort. I've had some winter nights with seriously labored [allergy, smoke and pet-related] breathing but I find this device has given me a little peace of mind and tangible change.

Coughing? Wheezing? Throat or sinuses feel irritated? During those winter months, especially when staying indoors, heated air tends to be dry and that dryness may cause upper respiratory irritations. Most household and office heating solutions have the undesirable side effect of excessively drying the available breathing air. Using a humidifier helps moisten indoor air. The AIR-O-SWISS 7133 Humidifier uses high frequency vibration to generate micro-fine mist, so that breathing does not induce discomfort due to dry nasal passages and throat. You can select the temperatures of the mist from cool to warm. Effectively relieve your dry nose, throat, lips, and skin with the ability of selecting the choice of dispersing warm or cool mist. Its sleek design has easy to use controls and a transparent removable water tank. Germs, bacteria, and minerals that may be present in water are filtered from the mist using a replaceable demineralization cartridge (1 included) and ionic silver stick (not included). Overall, this humidifier is designed for your comfort and ease-of-mind in dry environments. Help shake away those winter blues with Air-o-Swiss 7133. Demineralization cartridge should be replaced every 2-3 monthsReplacements are TON 0030129 (single demineralization cartridge) or TON 0030546 (demineralization 3-pack)

WHEN it works it is OK. It has all of the defects described by the other reviewers. But they make up for the defects with rotten customer service. I bought this unit on January 31 07. Used it until the end of March, at which time I cleaned it and replaced all of the consumables per the instructions. I put it back in service two weeks ago. Six days ago it stopped working. I called their customer service. They use an out-sourced customer service group that will NOT talk to you, but rather, insists on taking your number and calling you back in the evening. Of course, they called back when I was out and left a message that they would call the following evening. They did not. I called back the next day and went through the same thing. That evening, since thay had not called by 8:30, I called them. This time, they insisted that I go through some trouble-shooting (all of which I had done previously). They then told me to leave it unplugged for a 1/2 hour (by which time they would be gone) and then "reset" the unit by pressing a button combination. I did this. The next day I called them again and got the same "wait until tonight" pitch. I insisted on an RMA number, which I received. HOWEVER, before they will tell you where to ship the unit, you need to FAX them a proof-of-purchase (their email address bounces back). The you have to wait for them to call. It is now 6:30PM on a Friday night and no call. So I called them and got their voice mail, where I was instructed to leave a message. So It will not get shipped to them this week. Next week I am traveling, so it won't get shipped until the following week, which means that they will not get it until after Christmas, which means it will be mid-January before I get a repaired unit. These people are total idiots. For a $200 humidifier, I would expect some sort of real customer assistance. Be warned before you buy.
UPDATE: Well, a month after I sent the defective unit in, I received a TOTALLY DIFFERENT AND MUCH CHEAPER UNIT in return. I am now on my THIRD phone call with these idiots and have yet to talk to someone who can resolve this problem. The right person is "not in the office" and will "call me back." HAH!! They NEVER call back. I wish I had never heard of these people.

This efficient Air-O-Swiss Ultrasonichumidifiier uses several cutting edge technologies to achieve an optimum quality of environmental control. High-frequency vibrations generate a micro-fine mist, while an Intelligent Temperature Compensation system (ICS) measures humidity relative to the room temperature and automatically adjusts the output to achieve an optimum balance dynamically as conditions change. The water is kept clean with three separate processes that make up the Microbial Protection System: ultrasonic technology, pre-heating, and Ionic Silver Stick. The latter makes use of the proven anti-microbial qualities of Silver, which has proven effective against more than 650 types of bacteria without any chemical additives. When operated with the pre-heating function, the water is heated to 176°F before it enters the nebulizer chamber. The mist exits the appliance at a comfortable temperature of 104°F. This neutralizes the cooling effect of mist to keep the room temperature from falling, and also keeps the water cleaner. Holmes HM5305-UC Warm Mist Humidifier Review

Holmes HM5305-UC Warm Mist Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I believe this item has received unfairly low ratings from other purchasers. Perhaps these reviews are from purchasers who have never owned a humidifier before, or who didn't bother to read the directions. I have owned three different humidifiers over the years, and this one has been overall the best.
I would agree the tank shape could stand some redesign. Like most humidifiers, you turn the tank upside down to refill, thus the top of the tank is best designed to conform to the shape of a tub or sink, so that it stays upright on its own while filling. This one does not do that, but it is still possible to prop it against the end of the tub to refill.
As for the other comments that have been made, of course it makes a gurgling noise. Water is dripping down into the base in order to be converted to steam. I have had the unfortunate experience of owning a humidifier that sounded like an 18-wheeler driving through my house--and believe me, this one is QUIET.
The only knocking noises I've heard were when the tank emptied while I was asleep and I didn't shut it off, AND I hadn't cleaned it in a very long time.
And of course the heating element is going to be hot right after you turn it off, and yes it could char a piece of wood if it came in contact with the heating element. The instructions CLEARLY STATE you must allow the heating element to cool before cleaning or refilling. I cannot imagine why someone would set something wet down on a wood table, or how the heating element came into contact with wood of one reviewer, as the heating element has a surrounding plastic framework that makes it difficult if not impossible to place anything directly against the heating element. Perhaps the user modified this plastic housing in some way.
Also, the tank cap has a mechanism that, together with the humidifier base, controls the amount of water that flows out of the tank. The only way this could malfunction and send water everywhere is if the cap was not screwed on properly (and just like a bottle of soda, if you don't screw the cap on properly, the bottle will leak), or if it is not placed on the base securely.
I have not found the recommended cleaning to be an issue. But then, I use the recommendations as a guideline, not a requirement. How much you cleaning you have to do depends on the condition of your water and your performance expectations.
The recommended "daily" cleaning is basically to remove the base reservoir and dump out any water and accumulated sediment. I actually only do this about once a week, and I have very hard water (lots of clay sediment and calcium. I cannot drink tap water, its that bad.) The recommended "weekly" cleaning is to fill the base reservoir with vinegar and soak for 20 mins, and wipe down the heating element and surrounding housing to remove any calcium deposits. I actually only do this about every 3 months. Sometimes I actually have to chisel off the calcium from the heating element! And with all this obviously poor maintenance, I have noticed no diminished performance!
I'm not sure what the 'reboot' requirement is, stated by one reviewer. The instructions clearly state that you should turn off the humidifier when you remove the tank for refilling, or when you are cleaning. This makes sense. Leaving it on without the heating element resting in a reservoir of water is like putting an empty pan on a hot stove burner. It will damage it. But turning it off for the few moments required for filling or cleaning is sufficient. No further effort is required. And I really don't understand how one is personally offended by an inanimate object.
As for the size of tank, and how long it lasts, that all depends on the settings you use, and the size of your room. The 36-hour timeframe advertised by the manufacturer is at the unit's lowest setting, as most manufacturers do. I keep mine set on low speed, with the humidity percentage at about 60%. This lasts 24 hrs. I definitely notice a humid feeling when walking into my bedroom where I keep the humidifer. My bedroom measures about 12' x 18', but I keep my bedroom door open always so the humidity isn't just staying in my bedroom alone. The packaging states accurately that this humidifier is intended to serve a medium-sized room, not a whole house or very large rooms.
I really love the fact that this model does not require filters. I've had humidifiers that require filters, and of course you can never find the filter when you need one, and they are often very expensive. I've also had a humidifier that advertised no filter required, then upon reading the fine print inside the box, learned that while a humidifier was not REQUIRED, it really needed one to function properly.
I replaced my last humidifier with this one because the lat model I owned had no controls other than on/off, and pumped out so much mist it soaked everything around it, and was a cold mist model that did not keep the calcium deposits inside the reservoir--everything that got soaked by the mist ended up with calcium residue on it that was impossible to remove.
All in all, a very good model. The only thing I would like better is a domed-top model that could rest easily in the tub for refilling.

Germ Guardian H2000 Manual Ultrasonic Humidifier Review

Germ Guardian H2000 Manual Ultrasonic Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Germ Guardian H-2000 is the best ultrasonic humidifier I've seen in a decade. But that only means that it works. The humidifier is well-crafted but thoughtlessly designed. I was pleased with a couple of ultrasonics that I had years ago. When their motors eventually died and I needed replacements, I found that ultrasonic humidifiers had all but disappeared from the market by the mid-1990s. So I bought evaporative humidifiers instead. The trouble with evaporatives is that they require a wick, which molds easily and pervasively and must be replaced at least every two weeks. That's expensive. It costs me $150 per year to run each of my evaporative humidifiers. I'd rather have ultrasonics, which are less prone to mold, less expensive to operate, and quieter. When ultrasonic humidifiers reappeared on the market a few years ago, I bought some....and returned them all. They broke within weeks and left puddles on the floor.
This brings me to the Germ Guardian H-2000. If you want an ultrasonic humidifier that isn't fit for the trash, you have to pay more than $100. This H-2000 seems to be well-made. Happily, you can set it directly on the floor if you like. I have run it for days sitting on hardwood, and the floor is not even damp. There are little compartments for storing the power cord and for the air filter. A small brush is provided for cleaning the inside of the unit, though I don't know what use it would be. The humidifier barely makes a sound. The controls are straightforward. You choose cool or warm mist, then turn the humidity dial to the level of output you desire. A blue LED lights when the power is on, and a red LED indicates when the tank needs refilling. I've never had any trouble with white dust from this humidifier.
On the downside, the 1.4 gallon tank has a handle only on top, so it is difficult to balance the tank to fill it from the bottom. It's also rounded on top, so you can't set the tank down to fill it either. Remember the days when all humidifier tanks were flat on both ends and had a handle on each for ease of filling? No more. Usually ultrasonic humidifiers are easy to clean if they should mold, because all the innards are exposed. But the H-2000 has an optional warm mist, so water passes through a concealed channel as it goes from the tank to the vibrating disc, where it is presumably exposed to heating coils. You could run ammonia through the channel to kill mold, but there would be no way to remove slime. The tank is infused with silver nanoparticles to retard microbe growth, but machine's body isn't. Strange, because mold growth in humidifiers never starts in the tank. The on/off knob would benefit from some ridges. It's so smooth that I can't grip it unless my hands are perfectly dry.
The Germ Guardian H-2000 takes 30 hours to empty the 1.4 gallon tank with the humidifier set on its highest output. That's an output of 0.047 gallons of water per hour. My evaporative humidifiers put 0.083 gallons per hour into the air, nearly twice as much. For this reason, the H-2000 is best suited to a small bedroom, placed close to the bed. In the "warm" mode, the water is heated to 80 degrees F. The mist is warm in the base, the column (spout guide), and where it comes out of the spout. But by the time it gets a couple of inches from the machine, the mist is cool. So I see little point in the warm mist feature. If you want an ultrasonic humidifier, I won't try to dissuade you from this one. In spite of its deficiencies, it's the best one I've found in recent years. But it's only suitable for small rooms.

Germ Guardian H2000 Ultrasonic Humidifier uses nano-silver technology to fight the growth of mold and bacteria in the water so germ-free water is vaporized into the room. The ultrasonic technology is virtually silent when running. There are no evaporating pads or wicks to clean or replace. This product even lets you know when it's time to refill the water tank. There is also the option for warm or cold humidification.

Honeywell HE260A Higher Capacity Whole House Bypass Humidifier Review

Honeywell HE260A Higher Capacity Whole House Bypass Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Product was relatively easy to install but I downloaded better instructions from an internet website than were included with the product. Also, my furnace had a 24v tap so the electrical hookup was easy.
Some notes:
1) I did not buy the installation kit because I did not need the sail switch (because of the 24v tap) and most of the cost of the kit is for this switch. It is much cheaper to buy only the pieces you need - they are carried at most hardware & building supply stores. Plan on spending about $30 on parts.
2) The template for cutting the humidifier hole into the duct is the instruction sheet. If I had not read this on another review, I would not have found it. Shame on Honeywell for not telling you this in the instructions!
3) Use the saddle valve to regulate the water flow to the unit, otherwise you will waste a lot of water. This was the only thing I disliked about it but I think this is the case with all new designs.
4) Instructions tell you that you can install the unit on either the supply (warm air) or return (cold air) duct. But most reviews I read from professionals recommend mounting the humidifier on the cold air return duct in case you have a water leak - will not ruin any of the furnace electronics or motor.
Overall I'm satisfied with this unit - will likely install one in both my kids houses.

Air-O-Swiss U650 Digital Warm & Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidification System Review

Air-O-Swiss U650 Digital Warm and Cool Mist Ultrasonic Humidification System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After having an infant addition to our family, I began looking for a humidifier especially with the Winter season fast approaching. I was looking at function, maintenance parts and prices as well as build quality and design. I didn't like how the various humidifiers looked like - too quirky, too plastic-looking, too generic.
Then this Air-O-Swiss U650 caught my eye. It had an elegant design and shiny white colour that would fit any contemporary home. It reminded me of our Rabbit Air purifier in both elegant design and price. If I were to add this to our home, it wouldn't be an eye sore.
FEATURES:
1. Digital Display. Easy to read display even from afar to spot check it's current setting.
2. Sensitive Touch Controls. No need to press oddly raised buttons. This one sits flush on the unit for a seamless and simple design.
3. Simple Amber Lighting. No multi-coloured tacky lighting. This reminded me of the old German car lighting that was easy to see and read. At night, you can dim the backlight for a non-annoying soft light.
4. Hygrometer. This is one of the reasons why I chose this unit. Unlike the cheap humidifiers that just keeps on spewing moisture into the air. This unit will alert you of the current humidity level in your room/home. From there you can make a sensible judgement if you still want to introduce more humidity by raising the desired level.
5. Auto Mode with an "Intelligent Temperature Compensation". Humidity levels change when the temperature changes. You can't just expect to keep on maintaining a certain level when it's not advantageous and healthy. By setting the unit to auto mode, it calculates the desired humidity level based on the current temperature. No need to second guess what level you should be at throughout the whole day.
6. Cool/Warm Mist. Both have it's pros and cons depending on the current condition and season. You'd want a warm mist on cooler days and a cool mist on colder days.
THOUGHTS:
Like any humidifier or product that involves water for that matter, you'll need to know how to best maintain the product to keep it functioning as expected and prolong the life of the unit. For this specific Air-O-Swiss humidifier, there are two parts to replace:
- The Ion Silver Stick that eliminates bacteria in the water and is expected to be replaced yearly. Expensive, but at least just done annually.
- Demineralization Cartridge that needs quarterly replacement depending on the usage of the unit. If you use tap water, this is important to prevent any white dust due to hardened minerals to form in the water. Upon first use, you will need to soak this cartridge in water for 24 hours. The work-around is to use distilled or reverse osmosis water. That way there are no minerals in the water and you won't need this cartridge at all. Of course the cost is now buying distilled water versus buying another part. Choose your poison. If you have a reverse osmosis filter for your home, then that is even better. You save on buying this part and you are helping keep the product in the best shape ever.
Although I'd love to have this unit be more compact and slim, I guess it's necessary to be this bulky to prevent frequent water refilling for at least a day or even days. Where I reside, it rains quite often so there is enough moisture in the air at times. Since the unit is able to read the humidity levels in the air, it won't operate unless needed. This in turn helps eliminate the water tank refills.
If you were to invest in a humidifier, skip the novelty of the others and the guessing game of humidity levels in your home. This will do the job. Quite elegantly, I must add.

Honeywell HE360A Whole House Powered Humidifier Review

Honeywell HE360A Whole House Powered Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I installed the HE360A onto a new Ruud 95%+ high-efficiency dual-stage heating and cooling system and I'm controlling the unit with a Ritetemp 6080 thermostat. The humidifier works beautifully, and based upon my research with heating and cooling specialists, this unit is optimally-designed to conserve power and to protect the heating and cooling system. Bypass units (that use a piece of ducting connecting the return and supply sides of the system) rob the heating system's efficiency and will push moist air through the system. Installing this unit on the supply side of the ductwork ensures that all of the humidified air will be moved into the home, not back into the system. While this design does use more water than some other units, the savings in power and the increased efficiency of the unit will minimize its financial impact. By the way, I attached the unit to a hot water supply, not cold, as this helps the moisture to be absorbed into the heated air.
The newer Honeywell humidifiers create steam to humidify the air. While this is probably optimal for humidification purposes and should minimize the amount of water used, the amount of electricity these systems use to create the steam will definitely impact your pocketbook. From a "green" perspective, I find that water is a cheaper and more renewable resource than electrical power. The old-fashioned drum humidifier units will save water, but use a holding tray of water to soak a pad that the air travels through. If not cleaned thoroughly and often, they develop mold and mildew and that will get circulated through your house... a very dangerous and unhealthy option.
Installing this unit did prove a bit of a challenge because of it's combination with the Ritetemp 6080 electronic thermostat, which includes a humidistat. Most online "experts" say that the HE360 units won't work with this kind of thermostat/humidistat because of incompatible electrical design of the two systems. However, I'm a firm believer that anything is possible with enough research and who doesn't like a challenge? To make this work, I purchased a small 24VAC SPDT relay from Grainger, part number 4A708 (about $15) and did NOT use the installation kit recommended for the humidifier or the humidistat that was provided with the unit. Since my air handler provides 24VAC to the thermostat and the thermostat interally provides settings to determine when the humidifier will run, I used the relay to control power to the 120VAC side of the system which acts as a switch to turn the entire humidifier on and off. To accomplish this, I installed a new electrical circuit and outlet to be used solely by the humidifer. I installed the relay inside an electrical box to control the power to this outlet. Using low voltage wiring I connected the relay to the "C"ommon contact on the air handler and to the "H"umidifier wire from the thermostat. I then used a wire nut to connect the two yellow wires on the HE360, which basically sets the unit "on" any time it has power. When the air handler is running in heat mode and the thermostat determines that humidification is required, the relay is powered and provides 120VAC power to the outlet and the humidifier is turned on. When the relay loses power, the 120VAC is turned off that the HE360 shuts off. The thermostat can be set to work two ways: to run the humidifier and the air handler's blower anytime when the humidistat says that humidity is required, or to run the humidifier only when the air handler is in heat mode and the blower is running and humidity is required. I could have directly wired this unit to the air handler's power, but I chose to use the outlet so that I could unplug the unit in an emergency or for service.
I strongly recommend this unit... I've tried several of whole house units over the last 20 years and this is the first that really works. I've already helped others to install these units on their HVAC systems and all of them work great, none have had any problems and all are amazed at the difference the humidifier makes in their homes.

This Replacement filter works perfectly on my Honeywell HCM-6000. I found that the filter will last longer if you flip it every other water fill up. This will not allow any one side to stay in the water too long and turn sour.

Vornado Whole-Room Evaporative Humidifier, HU1-0021-28 Review

Vornado HU1-0021-28 Whole-Room Evaporative Humidifier
After owning this for some 2+ years, I have updated this review and raised the rating. The following text is updated:
We have owned a number of humidifiers in the past. The last one we owned (& liked) was the now discontinued Vornado model (the ugly gray box w/ 2 water tanks and a fan that sat in the lid). This new version, solves some of the problems of the old design and creates new problems of its own. As another reviewer has noted, the beauty of the old system was its simplicity (read: fewer parts to clean). That simplicity, is somewhat gone.
The biggest improvement is the noise level. The old design made a loud gargling sound periodically as the air bubbled into the tanks. Further, the lid with the fan, sometimes did not sit right and made a buzzing vibration sound.
The other major improvement, that it has taken me sometime to appreciate, is that there is less water sitting around in a basin that can collect junk and grow nasty stuff. This ended up needing less cleaning than the orignal model. On the other hand, the black color also makes it harder to appreciate mold inside the unit.
The new tank now has a filling cap that locks into the tank. There is a separate fancier spring loaded drain for water to move into the basin. I had some concern abou the top of the tank not being flat and making the filling more difficult. However, it seems sturdy enough as long as you are careful and don't use as much high pressure to fill it. There is no longer an option for two tanks, so more refill runs.
As for the rest of the design, there is now a physical separation between the evaporation chamber, and where the water tank is placed. This is mostly nice, since you don't have to worry about bugs and other junk falling into the evaporation chamber. You have to be a little more vigilant about mold buildup inside the chamber since it is closed off and not visible on every refill.
On the plus side, the fan is more securely attached to the rest of the humidifier, thus reducing noise.
As far as humidification, it still works great. The fan is quieter and just as efficient (if not more). The fancy electronic humidification settings seem to work well and allow for less over-humidification (fewer refills). So in summary:
- quiet
- efficient
- not as simple a design as the older model
- more parts but seems to need less cleaning.

Air-O-Swiss AOS 7144 Ultrasonic Humidifier Review

Air-O-Swiss AOS 7144 Ultrasonic Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My family and I moved from Southern California (where we slept with the windows open nearly year round for wonderful, well rested sleep) to Phoenix, Arizona (where the humidity hovers at most to 15% in my house according to my hygrometer.) After a month (and before we got the humidifier), my kids (3 and 1) were absolutely suffering. During the night, they were choking and hacking, wheezing and just plugged up. I was no different. Needless to say, our sleep was badly affected. I knew it was the air situation. After 3 nights of researching the different types of humidifiers, I finally settled on buying two Air O Swiss 7144 units (one for each kid's room). Although it was expensive, I buy things for the long haul and figured better to spend up front then have problems with cheaper models down the road. I have since turned it on absolutely every single night for them and the difference is short of miraculous. Here are some points: 1- a full tank lasts two nights running at 8 hours a night with the windows closed and the door nearly shut (about an inch ajar at most)
2- tank is not difficult to fill. I use one 3 gallon water bottle
(normally used for my drinking water dispense) to completely fill up both humidifier units
3- to maximize space and thus get the most water into the humidifier, I removed the demineralization cartridge and use only reverse osmosis drinking water for my unit. I have had ZERO WHITE DUST. The R.O. water is purified enough that there are no remaining minerals to be churned out as white dust. This trick also saves me from having to replace the cartridge. (BTW, our tap water is VERY hard so I didn't want to use it even with the demineralization cartridge because why make the machine work harder than it has to?) R.O. water is perfect and again, NO WHITE DUST AT ALL!!!!
4- It's so quiet, it's ridiculous. I LOVE that.
5- The warm mist feature is perfect. It does not raise the temperature of the room so it's never like a sauna. The air leaving the machine even at warm mist feels somewhat cool (and the first night I kept checking in on the kids to make sure I wasn't freezing them) but the unit actually heats the water to 104 degrees which is just the right temp at maintaining room temp (no moist saunas!!) and/or preventing steam burn to your finger in case a curious little one chooses to wave his/her hand in the mist.
6- I've religiously used the units each night for the last 3 months with absolutely no problem.
7- The buttons don't light up or create distracting glows. Important for me because I wanted the kids' rooms to remain relatively dark as that's what they're used to.
8- There is no leaking or condensation on the unit. The mist is so fine that it evaporates before it touches the little folding dinner tray table that I have each unit placed on. The carpet underneath doesn't feel soggy or anything. It truly produces an ultrafine mist that dissipates almost immediately.
9- I can adjust the flow and humidity to my liking (to get 2 nights' worth of output from one tank, I set it on warm mist at the lowest air flow at 55% humidity)
10- It automatically shuts off when it runs out of water. There is a blinking light that indicates that the machine is on "On" but there's no water. I usually press the off button the after the second night's use. If I forget to press off and fill the tank up on the third night, I noticed that since the machine is technically "on" (even though there's no sound or movement indicating that), as soon as I put the filled tank back on the unit, it immediately starts working on the settings I last set it on.
11- I have yet to use the cool mist (since it's still winter) but I read that it actually helps to maintain (at the very least) or slightly lower the room temp which is convenient in summer months.
All in all, I love this machine. By the way, on a few occasions when my older child needed me to sleep next to him until he fell back asleep (usually a nightmare woke him up), I noticed within 10-15 minutes that my breathing was VERY different in his room where the unit had been running for several hours into the night. No clogged sinuses or difficult inhalation. Once he was appropriately tucked in and I would go back to my room, within 5-10 minutes, my breathing would get adversely affected. That's how dry the air is in our house. So, that's why after 3 months of enjoying how well it's worked in the kids' rooms, my husband and I are looking forward to our own good sleep after just purchasing our 3rd machine.
