Port-a-Cool KuulAire KA70 Portable Cooler (150 Sq. Ft.) Review

I bought this unit to cool a small area in my basement because there are no windows down there to vent a air conditioner. I didn't think a company would sell me a fan for 200.00!!! I'm so "HOT" right now(pun intended). According to the description you would be led to believe that this unit is a bit more than a fan. There is absolutely no need for this product, it is absolutely unneccasary. It's less than a fan! A fan covers more area than this box of nothing. It is described as an air cooler that can handle approx 150 square feet. That's a lie! I called the company and they told me that depending on where you live it might not work! If you are in the market for something more than a fan this is not the product for you. The sad thing is I paid extra for shipping and I have to pay to send it back to them I'm gonna be out of 73 bucks!!!. Choose wisely.

SPT SF-611 Portable Evaporative Air Cooler with Cooling Pad Review

Think of it as a personal cooler. Even in low humidity New Mexico this unit cannot cool any room, but right in front of the unit you'll get 3-4 degrees of relief (verified with a good thermometer) plus the benefit of blowing air, moving side to side. The bells and whistles ("natural" and "sleep" modes) are crap, and the unit is moderately loud on the lowest speed (unbearably so at higher speeds). Still it performs its basic function, and I wonder if any portable swamp cooler really works that well. Limited relief at an acceptable cost.

A versatile and economical way to cool and humidify the surrounding air, this evaporative air cooler, humidifier, and fan easily rolls from room to room for use anywhere in the home. Unlike a fan that blows hot air and more energy efficient than an air conditioner, the appliance uses water to cool a personal space up to 12 degrees lower than the ambient temperature. The air cooler works by endothermic reaction (a reaction that consumes heat). The unit sucks air through a wick saturated with water; as the air flows through the wick, some of the water evaporates into the air, consuming the heat that was in the air. A cool air stream then gets blown out the front of the unit through oscillating louvers for even distribution. The appliance can also be used as just a fan or a humidifier when temperature is not an issue. Easily change the settings with the included remote control.
In addition, the air cooler provides a unique three-dimensional cooling pad for enhanced cooling performance. Made of cellulose paper, it comes treated with special stiffening and wetting agents for maximum water absorption and retention, as well as an anti-rot chemical to prevent algae and bacteria growth. Other details include an LCD panel; three air speeds; three modes of computer-controlled airflows that include Normal, Simulated Natural Wind, and Sleep; a washable filter; a 7-liter water tank; lockable casters; and a timer that can be set from a half hour to seven-and-a-half hours. Though perfect for use in dry climates, please note that the appliance does not work very effectively in areas with high humidity since it utilizes water to cool. The 160-watt air cooler measures 14 by 16 by 32-1/2 inches and carries a one-year warranty.

Hunter 82042 Energy Star Bathroom Fan with Light, White Review

Hunter 82042 Energy Star Bathroom Fan with Light, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This fan is very quiet, but the description is bad, design is fair, and looks are fair.
- There is no way to turn off the night light. I assumed it would turn off when it was light in the room, but it does not. You can get a $2 night light that turns on/off with a light sensor, so why can't they put such a sensor on a $150 fan? I replaced the 4w incandescent night light with an LED since you can't turn it off and I don't want to have to replace the thing every month.
- The housing is not designed for installation into an existing hole. The hole needs to be much bigger than the housing due to the duct attachment point and very deep housing. I had to remove the duct and re-install with much difficulty once the housing was in place in the ceiling. The housing is 8" deep, making it a tight or even impossible fit in any place except a top floor bath.
- The grille is approximately 12x13 at the largest point, and the grille is curved, so it is about 10x11 at the corners. The 14.75" x 14.75" shown in the manufacturer's description might be including the box it came in. I don't know where they got that measurement.
- The light bulbs are low energy CFL with a two-prong conductor that I have never seen before. I checked my local big box store and could not find a replacement bulb. I hope the bulbs last a long time. What's wrong with a normal light bulb fixture?
- The design is ugly, kind of like a bulging belly sticking to your ceiling.
I specifically selected this model based on the advertised grille dimensions, hoping to cover up the hole from the old fan. Had I been able to get my hands on the thing in a store, I would never have purchased it. There was no store within 100 miles that had this fan, so I purchased based on the description. Amazon/manufacturer need to accurately describe the items they sell.
This is a disappointing purchase, especially at this price, but I decided to go ahead with the install since I have to assume that the other descriptions will be just as inaccurate and our old fan was already pulled. 2 stars only because it is very quiet.

Hunter 82004 Orleans Bathroom Fan with Light, Imperial Bronze Review

I gave it a 3 star for 2 reasons:
the 2 part metal design over the glass is not a good fit, it is offset and outer piece does not properly line up with its matching piece.
the fixture does not accept a regular bulb or an energy saver; must use a regrigerator bulb which is short and fits in the limited space provided.
it is quiet though

Unistar DF158 Multi-functional 4-in-1 Portable Air Cooler Review

Unistar DF158 Multi-functional 4-in-1 Portable Air Cooler
Average Reviews:

This unit is nothing to write home about but I guess it serves its purpose. I purchased this fan for my small studio apartment. To be honest I'm slightly disappointed. If you are looking for a medium sized unit for an office or small apartment this unit does help.
That being said, don't be misled by the air cooling feature. This is not an air conditioner and will only give you slightly cooler air flow. The fan on high isn't really powerful. The two reusable ice packs are nice so that you can rotate them in. The timer control works well so that you can set it to run when you leave or go to sleep and it will continue to run for 1, 2, 4, or 8 hours. The setup and controls are very user friendly. You can get this unit up and running within 2 minutes of opening the box.
I don't think I would buy this unit again. I'd probably look for something with a higher speed fan or something that cools the air a little bit better.

No installation! Save 95% on your AC electric bill with this 4-in-1 cooler/ionizer/humidifier/fan with a power consumption of 38 Watts only. This year, beat high energy costs with the Kaito Air-Cooler-Ionizer-Humidifier, yet the room temperature is reduced by as much as 12 F in the direct air way. The built-in fresh air anion generator releases streams of negative ions that attract dust and other allergens down and out of the air you inhale. Air feels as fresh as after a springtime rain. It uses the water to cool and humidify the air, ideal for desert areas such as California, Nevada, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona and etc. The drawer-type water tank capacity is about half a gallon, which means the cooler can run for 8 hours continuously or even longer. To achieve higher cooling efficiency, you can even mix water with ice. There are no expensive filters to buy; just rinse the permanent filter. Other features include three air speed: H/ M/ L, Two modes selectable, 8 hour timer. For more information, please call toll free 1-866-524-8676.

Holmes HM630-U Tower Humidifier Review

Holmes HM630-U Tower Humidifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
In the past, I have been very disappointed with humidifiers. Either they leak or don't seem to do much of anything. However, this Holmes U Tower humidifier is sleek in design and has a few nice features such as:
- The two filters are easily accessible at the base of the unit.
- The tank is easy to handle, fill, and not too heavy to carry. If you have a small sink, you can always fill this slightly long tank in the bathtub or by using a teapot or water jug.

- You have the option to set the humdifier manually on low, medium, or high humidity continuously or you can set it to automatically go on at low, medium, or high at a pre-set humidity level. If you use the automtic feature, then the unit cycles on and off like a thermostat would (although it does that too frequently for my taste).
- In addition, the display shows the humidity of the room the unit is in, which is a nice feature.
- The humidity level increases pretty fast, which is not typical of other units I've experienced.
- According to the manual (I haven't tried this feature), you also have an hour timer option of setting the unit to turn on or off after so many hours. This means, for example, you can program it to turn off 5 hours later or turn on 5 hours later.
- The unit has a small footprint (see cavaet below), so it doesn't take up much floor space.
With regard to the operation of the unit, you must remember to press and hold the on/off button to turn off the unit. If you unplug the unit, the humidifier returns to its factory default settings so you'll have to quickly reprogram it every time. This is exceptionally easy to do, but some might find this annoying.
One very nice feature that remains in operation when turning off the unit from the front panel but leaving it plugged in is that the humidity of the room is always displayed. Obviously, you lose this benefit when you unplug the humidifier from the wall outlet.
When setting the unit to the automatic feature that enables it to operate like a thermostat, the unit may cycle on and off every few seconds or minutes depending on the humidity of the room, which means you'll hear the fan cycle on and off repeatedly. If this is likely to disturb you while sleeping, then just put the unit into manual mode as I find you can never have too much humidity in the winter anyway. Of course, make sure you have enough water in the tank to run all night. The tank is rated to hold water for 36 hours of continuous use. However, I have only been able to get 10 hours continuous use on a tank at the highest humidity setting - so keep this in mind when leaving the unit unattended.
I ordered the wick filters from the manufacturer because they are hard to find elsewhere; even though Wal Mart and other local stores carry the Holmes line, they don't necessarily sell all the filters for every model. The filters arrived promptly within a few days.
The box says the unit comes with a 5-year limited warranty but the pamphlet inside says a 3-year limited warranty. I called Holmes at 1-800-546-5637 and they confirmed it was actually a 3-year limited warranty, so don't be swayed by the box advertising.
There is one caveat that you might consider important, although this would not deter me from buying the unit. Since this unit is a tower model, it is easier to knock over (especially on an unsturdy surface such as carpet). You might want to take this into consideration in case you have young kids that run around or large pets that might wreck havoc in your house--meaning you may have to alter the placement of the unit to account for this scenario. My observation is that the chances of knocking this unit over are somewhat higher than the squat-to-the-floor models I'm so use to and which have been so ineffective.
Overall, I am very impressed with the unit compared to the four other humidifiers I've had previously. I had a Vicks humidifier, a different Holmes humidifier, a Hunter humidifier, and another one whose name I can't remember. I've always been less than satisfied, so this is a nice change. I've been so pleased with this unit that over six months later, I ordered a second one.
Update October 2010 - Finally one of my unit's humidity sensors failed. However, since I've had this unit for several years that is to be expected. I can still use the unit to increase the humidity in the room but I just won't know what the humidity level is unless I look at my second humidifier.

Vornado HU1-0021-28 Whole-Room Evaporative Humidifier
After owning this for some 2+ years, I have updated this review and raised the rating. The following text is updated:
We have owned a number of humidifiers in the past. The last one we owned (& liked) was the now discontinued Vornado model (the ugly gray box w/ 2 water tanks and a fan that sat in the lid). This new version, solves some of the problems of the old design and creates new problems of its own. As another reviewer has noted, the beauty of the old system was its simplicity (read: fewer parts to clean). That simplicity, is somewhat gone.
The biggest improvement is the noise level. The old design made a loud gargling sound periodically as the air bubbled into the tanks. Further, the lid with the fan, sometimes did not sit right and made a buzzing vibration sound.
The other major improvement, that it has taken me sometime to appreciate, is that there is less water sitting around in a basin that can collect junk and grow nasty stuff. This ended up needing less cleaning than the orignal model. On the other hand, the black color also makes it harder to appreciate mold inside the unit.
The new tank now has a filling cap that locks into the tank. There is a separate fancier spring loaded drain for water to move into the basin. I had some concern abou the top of the tank not being flat and making the filling more difficult. However, it seems sturdy enough as long as you are careful and don't use as much high pressure to fill it. There is no longer an option for two tanks, so more refill runs.
As for the rest of the design, there is now a physical separation between the evaporation chamber, and where the water tank is placed. This is mostly nice, since you don't have to worry about bugs and other junk falling into the evaporation chamber. You have to be a little more vigilant about mold buildup inside the chamber since it is closed off and not visible on every refill.
On the plus side, the fan is more securely attached to the rest of the humidifier, thus reducing noise.
As far as humidification, it still works great. The fan is quieter and just as efficient (if not more). The fancy electronic humidification settings seem to work well and allow for less over-humidification (fewer refills). So in summary:
- quiet
- efficient
- not as simple a design as the older model
- more parts but seems to need less cleaning.

The Vornado Whole-Room Evaporative Humidifier combines the proven reliability of evaporative humidification with Vornado\'s signature Whole Room Circulation. An effective, low-maintenance process, the deep-pitch blade circulator pulls harsh, dry air through the humidifier and pushes moist air further into the room, providing complete humidification. It also recovers and circulates heat off the ceiling to maintain room temperature. The easy-to-use push-button panel lets you control the humidity level and fan speed. Large 1.8-gallon capacity makes for fewer refills. Quiet operation won\'t disturb your sleep. Covers up to 1000 square feet. 15.5 x 10.25 x 12.1 inches. 5-year limited warranty.
