Slant/Fin Puri-Clear 55 Air Purifier Replacement Filter Pack - 1 ea Review

(More customer reviews)OK. Time to buy my yearly supply of filters. Had my purifier for many years. Loved it. UNTIL NOW. The filters arrived. No box. Just celaphaned flat filters/prefilters labelled "RFPC55". Trouble was, the filter looked NOTHING and I repeat NOTHING like the Slant/Fin filter combo I have used for many years. This Filters-Now Company claimed the filters they sent me were superior to the Slant/Fin replacement filters I ordered.
Differences included:
1. no foam sleeve for the filter.
2. Slant/Fin filter is porous flexible filter (similar to my vacuum's pre-hepa filter)encased in a porous foam sleeve. It is made by 3M and called Filtrete. The Filters-Now "replacement" filter has some sort of multi strand fiber material glued or burned to each side of the flexible filter (instead of encasing the filter entirely in a foam sleeve); this means the filter is exposed on all edges and the filter is very hard. I wondered if there are any gas off effects to be considered with these replacement filters. Also wondered how glue or burning this strand stuff to the filter affects the ability of the filter to actually process air.
3. The Slant/Fin prefilter has a super fine micro-perforated pellon like sleeve- reminds me of the outer casement of a breathable medical gauze pad. The inside looks like fine layers of cotton- not glued at all-think loose cotton ball material laid very flat. It has some sort of activated carbon properties to it. The Filters-Now prefilter appears to be only a single layer of some sort of denser cotton like material- reminds me of batting, close to a 1/16th of an inch thick, perforated on one side (I did not take it out of its celaphane wrapper, as it will be returned shortly). I see no carbon activated material at all.
4. Both are too small. The width is 1/4 inch too small and the length is between a 1/2 and 5/8 inch too small. I believe the reason for the difference was the substitution of the glued or burned on fiber strand stuff instead of the foam sleeve used by Slant/Fin (or whoever made their replacement filters)and the omission of the pellon sleeve on the prefilter. Of course that is just a guess. Regardless of the why, the directions for the Slant/Fin replacement filters found on the box say this -
"Install new filters in housing. Install with white filter inside; foam filter covers white filter. Be sure both ends form a proper seal to prevent air from bypassing filter". The Slant/Fin replacements fit tight! These Filters-Now filters had no instructions, no box, and by their own design create bypassing areas. I had to ask myself - What sort of air will result? Could ill-fitting filters possibly create a shorter life for the device overall?
I phoned Filters-Now as soon as I opened this package and saw they were completely different from what I expected! They claimed their filters are "superior" to Slant/Fin's. They also claimed Slant/Fin "went out of business". According to Slant/Fin, they did NOT go out of business; they SOLD this particular air purifier business to KAZ USA INC. KAZ claims they will be making filters for this purifier but they do not have a firm production schedule yet. They guessimated it would be three months. I have no idea how long ago Slant Fin sold this purifier business.
In my book, if something doesn't fit properly, I can't count it as "superior". What I can't quite figure out is why this company did not immediately offer for UPS to pick their stuff up and provide me with a credit for the entire amount, including shipping! I hope this is not going to get ugly. After all, clearly I ordered in good faith. For heavens sake, the Amazon page has a photo of the same Slant/Fin replacement filter box I have ordered before! Nowhere does the description alert a customer that the item will differ from the photo'd item! I am awaiting a phone call tomorrow from this company.
For the record, the only thing I found superior was Filters-Now unit price!

(More customer reviews)I got this to use when I had a cold. I should have been warned by the non-medicated label on this thing, but I thought at least the vapors would be good. What I got was a pathetic little fan that blows a sort of eucalyptus smell out all night. It does me almost not good.
It runs off of two AAA batteries, generally lasting a few nights. I like the smell the fan puts out, so it's pleasant or I'd give it one star, but as for any kind of healing properties this was just worthless to me. Literally, the only other good thing I can say about this is that it was cheap.

These pads really help remove the mineral by absorbing particulates before they stick to the hot surface in the humidifier. DGTL Sonic Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)This is the fourth humidifier I've used during the past 2 years. This one is the best. But the competition is such that it only takes a little quality to be the best. This one has its issues, but I am very glad I bought it.
Pros:
1) Lots of vapor; brings humidity up in the room fairly rapidly
2) Almost totally quiet.
3) The filter does a great job in removing particulates in the water. No white dust on any of the furniture in my room. Supposedly also kills bacteria, as well.
4) Has a warming feature; better than nothing but only raises the temperature of the vapor by a few degrees.
5) Looks like it will be very easy to clean. The instructions say to use no chemicals, bleach, or vinegar to clean, unlike most humidifiers. They even give you a little brush to clean the metal part of the ultrasonic unit. Nice.
Cons:
1) Needs a side handle on the water tank so that after filling the tank with water one can easily lift it and carry it back to the humidifier. With only a handle at the top (which is upside down after one fills the tank), it is very difficult to flip right side up especially since it now weighs 8 pounds with all the water in it.
2) As many reviewers have already stated, the humidistat reading is worthless. Get a hygrometer and then figure out what humidity level you need to set the humidistat to so that you can have a comfortable humidity level in your room. For example, my digital hygrometer reads 47% (I like the room humidity to be in the high 40s) and the humidifer's humidstat reads 40%. So I set the humidstat to 40% to get the humidity level I want.
*** Five Week Follow-Up Note: It started to leak the other day and I will exchange it for another one. Also, the humidity indicator started to not work correctly. I hope I have better luck with the second one. Pain in the you know where. Like I said in my initial review, this one was really great-- when it worked!
*** Five Week and Two Day Follow-Up Note: No, this is not my blog on humidifiers. So I got the second one the other day. I discovered that the vapor CAN come out warm. So the first one I got was defective in that the vapor was staying cold. Now the bad news-- the humidistat is so far off that the humidity in the room has to get to 52% before the humidifier will shut off! The humidifier "thinks" the ACTUAL humidity in the room is 35% (it is 17% off!). (35% is the lowest DESIRED humidity level you can select on the humidifier.) I will exchange it for another one tomorrow. It's the last one. After that one, I get my money back. I spoke to a nice enough guy at the customer support line for the Korean manufacturer; he agreed, there is a problem with their humidistat. He suggested I unplug the unit for one or two hours and then try it. Yeah, right, that'll fix it. Why don't I just unplug it for an hour or two when the humidity gets to the desired level in my room and then plug it back in? That will definitely work. Okay. There will be one more entry and then I will wish you the best of luck with this unit or whichever one you wind up buying.
*** Now 1 year later! It works just fine. Very happy with it. Ordered two new filters from an Amazon vendor that just arrived. Only $10 each and will last the entire season. Cheap. That's it. No more entries. Good product, worth a try.

Venta 370 Digital Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)Like the title says right out of the box all it did was blink the display endlessly. The manual makes no mention of this condition specifically, but does advise re-seating the maintenance free box and trying again. No dice. With quality control of this caliber, letting a relatively simply device like this slip out in a completely non functioning condition, I'm not going to give them a second chance or any benefit of the doubt. I'll be interested to see some reviews of this unit from other who might get a functioning unit.
Also the marketing claim that this is the "First ever maintenance free humidifier" is patently false. You need to purchase a "maintenance free box" after every 1 000 hours of operation at around $30.00 a piece. Twenty four by seven operation during the cold months when my forced air furnace is operating means you get about six weeks before shelling out another thirty bucks. Not exactly "maintenance free" in my book or Merriam-Webster s book for that matter - where "maintenance" is defined as "the upkeep of property or equipment".
UPDATE 11/17/2007: Going against my better judgment we did decide to try another unit. Within 20 seconds there was a stream of cool mist flowing into my family room, confirming that my first unit was indeed DOA. The 2 gallon tank lasts around 20 to 24 hours. The top of the unit and the side in which the mist is flowing will always get soaked with water. You will find yourself frequently wiping it down of standing water. No matter how careful I tried it was impossible to remove the tank for filling or replace the tank after filling without getting water everywhere and creating a mess to clean up. I was willing to put up with all of the little annoyances that this humidifier had to offer because it really does make my family room much more comfortable to be in. However, after about five days of using this humidifier I noticed a white film on my television. Then I noticed that the white film was on everything. It took forever to clean up and quite honestly I don't think I'll ever be able to fully remove the dust and film that was deposited everywhere. I should have went with my gut instincts on this one.
Similar to my rant above regard the "maintenance free" box, the manufacturer makes very specific claims: "No germs, no filter, no cleaning, no white dust". I've never owned a humidifier in my life that generated so much white dust. The claims made are so definitively false, and I can't believe anybody at Venta would believe them to be true, that I'm tempted to bring the matter to the attention of Consumer's Union and/or my state attorney general's office.

I clean mine nightly before using it because I just don't want to have to worry about bacteria build-up. It's very quiet, does the job, and I've used it myself for colds. A very nice investment for a good product.

1.2 Gallon Hospital Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)My biggest complaint is that I have to refill it everyday and its awkward to carry the base when it has water in it. Next time I buy I humidifier I will get one that holds more water. Also when you go to refill it you have to take the motor top off and lay it somewhere dripping wet. It could definitely be designed bettter, but it works. You don't see the stream of moist air coming from it (maybe because its not heated) but moist air definitely comes out.
Anyway it works just fine, but its no frills. I wouldn't pay more then $20 for it though.

A pinch of salt, and it steams away and shuts off automatically when low.
I love the simplicity of this unit.
After years of using all the different fancy new kinds of humidifiers that need constant cleaning and special filters and antibacterial crap, this is very nice. No muss, no fuss, just moisture in the air.
The black stuff in the water is normal and is not gross, as someone said in another review.

(More customer reviews)During the winter, the air in our home is VERY dry so I was not turned off by reviews of this humidifier producing too much moisture. Boy was I wrong! After 3 consecutive days of overnight use, the carpet was drenched AND there was this odd white dust on everything within a 2-3 foot radius of the humidifier! I've used it on and off for the last few months and the results were ALWAYS the same....wet carpet and white dust. Needless to say, I am in the process of looking into humidiers that don't drench carpet or produce white dust.
