It WILL cut down on the amount of dust and crud entering the back of the unit and contaminating the saturated wick that is used to humidify.
As you well know with this unit, the cleaner and better quality the wick unit (1041) is, the better the unit will humidify.
It's not designed to be like a vacuum cleaner and suck particulate matter out of the air, but it WILL prevent air-borne particles from contaminating the wick unit and for that reason, I think it's worthwhile.
As a hint, change your wick element OFTEN, but one of these may last you all season...

Holmes HM630-U Tower Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)In the past, I have been very disappointed with humidifiers. Either they leak or don't seem to do much of anything. However, this Holmes U Tower humidifier is sleek in design and has a few nice features such as:
- The two filters are easily accessible at the base of the unit.
- The tank is easy to handle, fill, and not too heavy to carry. If you have a small sink, you can always fill this slightly long tank in the bathtub or by using a teapot or water jug.

- You have the option to set the humdifier manually on low, medium, or high humidity continuously or you can set it to automatically go on at low, medium, or high at a pre-set humidity level. If you use the automtic feature, then the unit cycles on and off like a thermostat would (although it does that too frequently for my taste).
- In addition, the display shows the humidity of the room the unit is in, which is a nice feature.
- The humidity level increases pretty fast, which is not typical of other units I've experienced.
- According to the manual (I haven't tried this feature), you also have an hour timer option of setting the unit to turn on or off after so many hours. This means, for example, you can program it to turn off 5 hours later or turn on 5 hours later.
- The unit has a small footprint (see cavaet below), so it doesn't take up much floor space.
With regard to the operation of the unit, you must remember to press and hold the on/off button to turn off the unit. If you unplug the unit, the humidifier returns to its factory default settings so you'll have to quickly reprogram it every time. This is exceptionally easy to do, but some might find this annoying.
One very nice feature that remains in operation when turning off the unit from the front panel but leaving it plugged in is that the humidity of the room is always displayed. Obviously, you lose this benefit when you unplug the humidifier from the wall outlet.
When setting the unit to the automatic feature that enables it to operate like a thermostat, the unit may cycle on and off every few seconds or minutes depending on the humidity of the room, which means you'll hear the fan cycle on and off repeatedly. If this is likely to disturb you while sleeping, then just put the unit into manual mode as I find you can never have too much humidity in the winter anyway. Of course, make sure you have enough water in the tank to run all night. The tank is rated to hold water for 36 hours of continuous use. However, I have only been able to get 10 hours continuous use on a tank at the highest humidity setting - so keep this in mind when leaving the unit unattended.
I ordered the wick filters from the manufacturer because they are hard to find elsewhere; even though Wal Mart and other local stores carry the Holmes line, they don't necessarily sell all the filters for every model. The filters arrived promptly within a few days.
The box says the unit comes with a 5-year limited warranty but the pamphlet inside says a 3-year limited warranty. I called Holmes at 1-800-546-5637 and they confirmed it was actually a 3-year limited warranty, so don't be swayed by the box advertising.
There is one caveat that you might consider important, although this would not deter me from buying the unit. Since this unit is a tower model, it is easier to knock over (especially on an unsturdy surface such as carpet). You might want to take this into consideration in case you have young kids that run around or large pets that might wreck havoc in your house--meaning you may have to alter the placement of the unit to account for this scenario. My observation is that the chances of knocking this unit over are somewhat higher than the squat-to-the-floor models I'm so use to and which have been so ineffective.
Overall, I am very impressed with the unit compared to the four other humidifiers I've had previously. I had a Vicks humidifier, a different Holmes humidifier, a Hunter humidifier, and another one whose name I can't remember. I've always been less than satisfied, so this is a nice change. I've been so pleased with this unit that over six months later, I ordered a second one.
Update October 2010 - Finally one of my unit's humidity sensors failed. However, since I've had this unit for several years that is to be expected. I can still use the unit to increase the humidity in the room but I just won't know what the humidity level is unless I look at my second humidifier.

(More customer reviews)First off I want to say that I did like the design of this unit. It was an interesting shape which did look cool on my dresser. I liked the fact that it was tall, so that the mist was released higher into the room. The oscillating nozzle at the top was great for dispersing the mist throughout the room. It also produced a good amount of mist at the highest setting.
Why did I return two of these units? One word - NOISE. On the first use the first unit seemed louder to me than the one in the store (I purchased the unit at Bed Bath and Beyond). After a few days of use, it got noisier. The sound it made sounded like an impeller or fan had a bad bearing. It was not super loud, but was loud enough to be unusable at night when trying to sleep. Thought maybe it was a defective unit, so exchanged it for another like unit. The second unit was quiet at first, but within two days the same noise started to develop again. So I exchanged it for a similar priced Germ Gaurdian model. Haven't used that one enough yet to make a recommendation, but out of the box it was significantly quieter than the Homedics unit ever was. It really has been whisper quiet so far.
It could be that both units came from a bad batch that was delivered to the store, but I was really disappointed with the noise level for a somewhat expensive ultrasonic unit. The other two reviews both say the unit is very quiet, so this may be the case. I will say it was quieter than my old Vicks humidifier. That thing sounded like a leaf blower!

It has a very innovative design because there is no tank to remove and fill under the sink. Instead you can add water from the top using a pitcher. The replacement wicks are more pricey than the Vornado evaporative humidifier. The cost of the wicks is a concern if you let it run out of water because then the wicks will gather dust and need more cleaning or possible replacement depending on how long you have let it run empty. (I edited this review so I would have put 4 stars rather than the original 5 but the "edit review" features do not allow you to change the number of stars.)

This air purifier is quiet and due to its compact size, can be placed off the floor on a bookcase, dresser top or top shelf which makes it optimal for space-saving and placement. I don't particularly like the noise from air filters and they have a tendency to keep me up.
After spending many dollars on replacement filters and new air cleaners when the filter is no longer made or easily available, this is a welcome addition with a permanent cleanable filter. I bought two of these, one for my bedroom and one for the living room. Set on low all of the time, it is great as it just sounds like a little white noise and is not noticable most of the time. The optional ionic on and off switch, night light, as well as the automated light indicating that the filter should be cleaned is a BONUS besides the low price. So far, I am enjoying cleaner air in an old dusty house with 3 cats and 2 dogs...
I have bought the Sharper Image ionic breeze for the bathroom and find it hard to clean and hope that when I have to clean this filter. Good value for the money.

Graco Cool Mist 1.5 Gallon Humidifier Review

(More customer reviews)As a child growing up, I always had the impeller type humidifiers in which a spinning tube would draw water inside of it and then toss it out in a visible mist. While these could be quite effective, they had the drawback of being loud and soaking everything around them.
When my daughter was born, we got an ultrasonic humidifier. The mist was a little finer, but again, it had the tendency to soak everything around it, and created scale on itself and its surroundings with tap water.
So this time I decided to go with the evaporative type of humidifier. With these, a fan draws moisture out of a wick filter that is then disbursed about the room. These types of humidifiers have the advantage of being self-regulating because evaporation is quicker in a dry room, slower in a moist room. They also trap the minerals and bacteria that may be in the water in the filter instead of spraying them in the room. The disadvantages are that they require costly filters, and you have to treat the water to keep bacteria, mold, and scale from building up on the filter and components. Both of these can be achieved with the addition of a few drops of humidifier treatments that can be found at your local Wal-Mart.
With all this in mind, I did lots of comparison shopping and finally turned to the Graco 1.5 Gallon Cool Mist Humidifier. This compact unit appears to be much more durable than other brands at a similar price point, and since its components are dishwasher safe, it is much easier to give it a thorough cleaning. Although the unit could be considered loud, especially on its high setting, the low setting is quite pleasant to me, and provides a nice white noise to counteract background sounds.Most importantly, it does a good job of raising the humidity into comfortable levels during the winter.And with the water appropriately treated, there is NO mold on my filter and minimal mineral deposits.
Note: this is advertised as a "baby" humidifier, but its shape and design fit as well as any other humidifier in any room of your house. We bought two. One for our bedroom, the other for my daughter.

You can choose 4 levels of mist and I turned it to the highest right away. It was a bit slow to start, the mist was small on the highest setting but after running it overnight, I woke up to a nice strong mist in the morning. We use it in our bedroom which is a medium size and it does the job perfectly. I've been using it for a week now and wake up without dry skin and throat. I love that it oscillates and also the pleasing design. It's also whisper quiet and you can turn the blue glow and oscillation on or off. Highly recommended.

We live in the Southwestern desert and our family members all have naturally dry skin so our humidifiers practically run year around (one in each bedroom, 365 nights a year). I only need to replace these filters about twice a year because, every month, I soak them in vinegar to remove the hard water deposits. This keeps the filters supple and able to absorb/output more moisture into the air. Don't buy the cheap "fakes" on eBay; get the original Vornado filters; they'll last a whole lot longer than the "fakes". Love the Vornado humidifiers too -- easiest to use and clean!

(More customer reviews)I rarely write reviews, but since this item didn't have any and we bought it recently as a new-baby humidifier, I thought I'd get the ball rolling with this one. We will use our humidifiers strictly for the baby, and although we've only been using this one for a week, I may update this review for a final verdict. After reading numerous other reviews (I'm aiming to pick up another one soon), I feel slightly more educated about the features that consumers might find more desirable in a humidifier.
What I like:
* It works. I wouldn't normally add this seemingly obvious comment as a plus, but after reading other reviews, it seemed worth mentioning. If it fails in the near future, I will update this comment.

* No filters or wicks necessary. I find this feature highly desirable - no added costs.
* Ultrasonic technology makes this unit run silently. And I mean silently! It makes no significant noise. Perhaps with other technologies, the mist volume could be heavier and thus noisier, but the quiet nature of this unit is pleasant. Also, thanks to the ultrasonic tech, the vapor stream is virtually instantaneous when switched on, both on warm or cold. Granted, a minor point, but nice. Which brings me to another pleasant feature....
* Emits both warm or cold mist. And does so effortlessly. One of its 4 face buttons allows a quick and easy switch from warm to cold and back, and as mentioned above, the change is immediate.
* The H4600 has 3 variable spray options. Low spray is perhaps too low, but the option is there if you want it to run all day and night. There is also a dual headed mist nozzle which allows greater choice at aiming the mist, but I don't find this feature particularly useful since the mist spray isn't all that strong to begin with, but it's a nice addition, nonetheless.
* Silver Clean technology claims to fight mold and mildew in the water tank, allowing for healthier vapors and less cleaning. Too soon to judge this feature, but even if it works a little, it'll be helpful and it's better than not having it.
* Easy interface. The front panel has a simple 4 button operation with a lit display. I found this to be a welcome feature. One button is simply On or Off. Another is variable spray volume (low, medium, high) kind of like a fan speed. The third is to switch from cold mist or warm mist. And the last button is for the night light. That blue circle on the face of the unit is the night light. It's fairly bright, but blue, so it's not as bright as it might be otherwise. Since we use this for the baby's room, we like this feature. The lit display shows the volume of spray (in a too elaborate display of LEDs), the chosen hot or cold mist option, and an indicator for low water in the tank. (The humidifier turns off when tank is too empty)
What I don't like:
* It's a bottom filled tank, meaning you need to lift out the tank, unscrew the underside cap to fill it with water. Thankfully, there are little handles on both the top and underside of the tank piece, but I don't understand why humidifiers don't regularly feature a top filling portal. It would be nice to be able to add water with a pitcher poured in the top rather than removing the entire tank, filling it and replacing it. The tank is fairly generous at 2.4 gallons, but that makes the full tank over 16 lbs. when full. Okay for me, but not the wife. Also, and perhaps more egregious is that the output nozzles on top are rounded and interfere with the tank laying flat on its back when being filled. You cannot lay this tank on its back to fill it so it must be held, or at least braced (unless I didn't realize that the output nozzles can be removed?)
* Cost. This is one of the most expensive room humidifiers I've seen. It does have a nice feature set, and so far, operates as advertised, so I think it's worth it, but the price may discourage potential buyers. My wife bought this one because it was expensive. She figured it HAD to be the best one. I'm not sure she was wrong about that.
NOTE: For some reason, the amazon page that displays this item lists the following as one of its features, "Digital display and clock with programmable run features". I believe this was a mistake taken from some other model that isn't being shown, although I've yet to see a humidifier with a digital clock on it. The picture amazon shows is the one we have. Well, I saw no such display or feature.There is no clock or digital display here, let alone programmable features. None that I saw, and I went through the manual. Perhaps this amazon model is one notch higher in this series of humidifiers and explains why it costs $20+ more than ours.
Conclusion: I was so disappointed with the design of the bottom-fill tank, and the poor placement of the output mist nozzles that I thought this was a deal breaker and I planned on returning it. But then I came onto to Amazon to research and buy another model, and after rooting around the reviews, I realize that this model is actually pretty good. I don't think the tank lasts 120 hours (5 days!), but it lasts pretty long. So, aside from the tank filling procedure, everything else about this humidifier is quite nice. Recommended.

** UPDATE **
The rounded silver colored output nozzles on the top of the unit can, indeed, be removed while refilling with water. That's helpful. It's still not perfect, as it doesn't lay flat on its back for refilling, but it helps. Also, the price of this unit has since gone up from when I wrote my review. We paid somewhere between $160-$180. Unfortunately, I don't recall for certain, but if you're thinking of buying this item, make sure you get the model with "Digital display and clock with programmable run features". Ours didn't come with that feature, and it's the only thing that explains the price difference from what we paid. I can't say if the extra cost is worth it, but I hope that helps.

Graco Humidifier Replacement Filter for 4.0 Gallon Review

(More customer reviews)I cleaned the unit (Graco 4-gallon cool mist) every day and filled it with water run through a very good quality countertop filter. Even doing this, I went through two of these $11 filters per WEEK (TWENTY-FOUR TIMES as many filters as stated by the manufacturer!), and simply couldn't afford to spend nearly $90 a month (just in filters!) to run a humidifier. That is, putting it simply, absolutely insane. Design is faulty -- filtered water shouldn't trash a brand-new filter in less than four days. I don't know anyone who could afford $90 a month for humidifier filters.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the product for my 50 stogie humidor. I was amazed when I put it in the humidor with cigars and checked it 6 hours later... humidity was regulated at 71%! I have a caliber III hygrometer so I know it is accurate. After 1 week of having the drymistat in the humidor, it constantly reads 70% humidity. I even checked the high and low humidity that is recorded on the caliber and it read 70%. Easy to use product... you just have to add tap water. Low maintenance as well... fill 1-3 months depending upon conditions. I paid 8$ at JR Cigar.. very inexpensive compared to other humidifying products.

After two weeks of constant nightly use, it "rattles" when misting; the seal between parts no longer holds because water now pours through the juncture of parts. I exchanged it. Again, the unit worked well at first, but now after three months, the "rattle" and leakage is evident. I am thinking that regular use wears the parts too fast, maybe if I only used it once in a while. At the very least, I do like the design and the ease of set up. It may even be worth a round of replacement parts.
